Book Reviews of The Elements of Typographic StyleBook Review: Insanely great! Summary: 5 Stars
Probably the most insightful piece of litterature on typography in the 21st century -- a classic. With this book, Bringhurst shares all of his sound advice, great tips and knowledge. If I had to take one book to a desert island, this would be the one -- even if there was nothing to write on there.
If there would be any cons to this book, it would probably have to be that the book may be a bit academic and dry to some. If you want an exciting tale of mystery and murder, go get yourself one of Jeffrey Deaver's books. If you want an equally fascinating tale of the battle for the slanted hyphen, however. This is the book for you.
Book Review: Typographic pornography Summary: 5 Stars
From the introduction: "Typography [is] not a set of dead conventions but the tribal customs of the magic forest, where ancient voices speak from all directions and new ones move to unencumbered forms."
For lovers of ideas, words and letters, type can be both noun and verb, art and science. Bringhurst's Elements of Typographic Style is a guide, an inspiration, and a reference, and my copy will no doubt remain a prized possession for many years to come. Its lovely historical perspective, coupled with practical commentary, make it a required member of any designer's, writer's or editor's library. Fine in all ways, just so.
Book Review: A Ferrari Summary: 5 Stars
This book is the Ferrari of typography books. Anyone seriously into typography should read it.
It is less useful, however, for beginners and self publishers, to whom it is often recommended. They will be less conscious that some of Bringhurst's advice is simply his opinion -- not an absolute rule or even standard practice.
Certainly read Bringhurst for advanced study. But if you're just learning about typography, there are better introductions. (My own favorite is James Felici's The Complete Manual of Typography).
Book Review: This book sums it all up Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great book for any more advanced graphic design student. The text is absolutely full of valuable information and will surely be a valid resource for years to come.
this book requires some prior knowledge of typography because it doesn't explain some of the more basic terminology, it simply assumes that you already have an understanding of vocabulary and at least have been exposed to some of these ideas in some form.
Definitely a must-have for any serious design book collection.
Book Review: Useful introduction to typography Summary: 5 Stars
The book is an excellent, not-too-basic review of most important topics in typhography. The writing is very clear and entertaining, the printing and design from the book itself is superb, as it should be expected, given the author's expertise in the matter.
I liked the thorough description of serifed, unserifed and greek fonts towards the end of the book, and the glossary of typographical signs at the end.
This book is a must for people interested in the subject!
