Book Review: Know the rules to break them

This is by far the best book on *traditional* typography ever written. More cleary, I think the rules stated in this book are meant for two kind of people: those who intend to do Swiss typography like old school typographers, or those who need to get acquainted with the history of the profession. Yes, you need to know the old rules, and see that some are like eternal truths, leading to really beautiful pages. But I end up breaking almost all of them when I design a book. It's sad.
Do an experiment: pick up a book from your shelf, read it's colophon, measure the spaces of the page, and so on. Do it several times with other books. Do their mesasures or typographical specifications conform to the rules of this book? Yes and no, tending to no. It's sad, as I said, but it's the truth. Modern typography have new rules still not stated anywhere. This wonderful book give you the foundations of the profession - you have to have it! -, but you'll find yourself in need of building your own rules.
