Book Reviews of The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything

Book Review: Fun and engaging book that could change your life
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this book! It was recommended by a friend and I'm so glad she told me about it. It complements other recent books I've read, like: Now, Discover Your Strengths; The Talent Code; Tribes; Emergence; The Hidden Power of Social Networks; and Leadership and the New Science. Sir Ken Robinson defines the Element as "The meeting point between natural aptitude and personal passion." In this relatively short and very powerful book, Robinson shares meaningful stories and examples from his own life and that of many others, to highlight the problems that exist within our own educational systems that create a barrier to our ability to encourage and cultivate the talents and capabilities of our young people and our work force.

Some of my favorite topics he covered were: The three features of intelligence- diverse, dynamic, and distinctive; the hierarchy of subjects (how we prioritize the `hard' sciences over other subjects such as the arts; the additional senses we have other than the typical 5 we learn about in school (e.g. vestibular, temperature, pain, kinesthetic, etc.); Newtonian versus Einstein inspired metaphors for our world view; living systems; tribes; learning theory; leadership; and more.

Robinson presents the dynamic and multidimensional nature of our senses, intelligence, creativity, and talents. He also proposes a new conception of human ecology- one in which we start to "reconstitute our conception of the richness of human capacity." His stories and research illustrate how our educational system and workplaces focus development on knowledge, practices, and capabilities that are designed for the industrialism, rather than the every changing and global world we and the next generations face in the future.

This book is fascinating and the author is a very good writer- he's funny too, which makes the reading easier. It provides specific examples and recommendations to help build environments in our school, home, and work, where every person is inspired to grow creatively and tap into their full potential. I highly recommend the book for teachers, students, human resource professionals, parents...pretty much everybody!

Summary of The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything

The Element is the point at which natural talent meets personal passion. When people arrive at the Element, they feel most themselves and most inspired and achieve at their highest levels. With a wry sense of humor, Ken Robinson looks at the conditions that enable us to find ourselves in the Element and those that stifle that possibility. Drawing on the stories of a wide range of people, including Paul McCartney, Matt Groening, Richard Branson, Arianna Huffington, and Bart Conner, he shows that age and occupation are no barrier and that this is the essential strategy for transforming education, business, and communities in the twenty-first century.

A breakthrough book about talent, passion, and achievement from one of the world's leading thinkers on creativity and self-fulfillment.
