Book Reviews of The Dresden Files: Welcome to the JungleBook Review: God love Jim Butcher AND Harry Dresden Summary: 5 Stars
I had never heard of the Harry Dresden Files until my son told me about the short-lived television series. I was a fan from the first time I watched it. Immediately thereafter, I started ordering all his books. I believe I just ordered the most recent two in the series. I can honestly say this is one of the most original characters I have read in a long time. For someone who's read thousands of books over the years, that's quite an endorsement for Mr. Butcher and his wizard.
What's even more fun is that the author is a "neighbor." Although his wizard is in Chicago, Mr. Butcher is just a stone's throw away. Kinda nice to have an author in the neighborhood.
Keep 'em coming.
Book Review: Jungle Liscious Summary: 5 Stars
For Dresden Files this is a requirement, for non-Dresden File fans, where the heck have you been? Great artwork, plenty of meat in the text, and it's all Harry Dresden--Chicago's yellow page advertizing wizard extraordinaire. It's great to see an art image that doesn't grate against the author's literary vision. Well, there is the monk's skull cap hair of the cop Carmichael, but the author's brilliant detail checkers didn't get a say until later in the process. Hey--he's a minor character anyway and we all know what happens eventually to the minor character, right? :-)
The story is a pre-quel to the books--so that's why it's a must for a Dresden Fan.
Book Review: Amazing artwork - just how I pictured it. Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a huge fan of Butcher's work with the exception of his novella "Backup." I also enjoyed the Sc-Fi series "The Dresden Files." Unfortunately, I ordered the first few novels from SciFi Book Club and they came with this old cheezy cover art that I had to dismiss if I wanted to picture Harry as he is written.
This graphic novel has fixed that for me! The artwork is amazing. It brings to life in full, vivid colors just how Harry is described - gritty, powerful, sarcastic, and simple at the same time. The plot is good, if short.
This is a must own for any Dresden fan. Highly recommend.
Book Review: WARNING: Graphic Novel Summary: 5 Stars
I'm not a comic book fan and yes, I said comic book. Jim Butcher calls it comics in memory of all the good ones he started out with and way before they turned into graphic novels. But Welcome to the Jungle was awesome! The graphic art was excellent, and it reads as all Butcher books read, lots of dry wit, sarcasm, and action. I would recommend this to any Butcher fan. It had me wanting more and I'm excited to see the Dresden Files converted to comic book. I have all his books, and I don't mind collecting the same stories if it's in this vein. Excellent purchase!! Five stars for story and art.
Book Review: Nominated for a 2009 Hugo Summary: 5 Stars
For those that don't know, the Hugos are the genre's version of the Oscars, except they are selected by the readers. This may not jive with the 13 reviews of 1 star on here, until you do a little digging and see that the low reviews of this book are based on the reviewers who purchased it thinking it was a new Dresden novel, instead of an original comic, scripted by Butcher and a prequel to his novels.
(Storm Front is now halfway through being adapted, and will be sold by Del Rey in two volumes...the equivalent of four issues each. Welcome to the Jungle was a four issue miniseries)
