Book Reviews of The Dresden Files: Welcome to the Jungle

Book Review: An enjoyable prequel graphic novel
Summary: 5 Stars

Okay, I know there's been some complaining from people who bought this that didn't realize it was a graphic novel. You can ignore those people. I doubt any of them have even opened it again after they realized it was a graphic novel.

It's good. The artwork is not the best, but I've seen much much worse. Actually, it's fairly good. The characters look how I expect them to from reading the book series, Dresden's cat Mister is comically HUGE, and the spell slinging looks nice. All of this is heightened by glossy pages. Some publishers like to use newsprint-like paper and that tends to not do the artwork justice (it saves money printing, I assume), but this is a nice production.

The writing is good. It's Jim Butcher, what do you expect? If you like the book series, you're bound to like the comic. He delivers his same quality to the graphic novel that he does the book series. Being a four issue graphic novel, it is a bit shorter and not as detailed as a novel, but I'm not complaining.

All in all, a fine graphic novel. I look forward to buying the graphic novel version of Storm Front.

Book Review: Pleasant Surprise
Summary: 5 Stars

I was a noob to graphic novels, this was my very first. As others have stated in review, it was a pleasant way to get a piece of Harry Dresden in advance of Turncoat, which comes out the 7th of April I believe. :) So not much longer. Woo Hoo! It was interesting to read the forward by Mr. Butcher and find out that he has always imagined Harry as a graphic novel looking character. It was nice to see deadpan sarcasm in the exchange between hero and villian. It was nice to explore a whole new way of looking at an old literary character, and I enjoyed it very much.

I'm disappointed at the less than intelligent reviewers that seem to get a great deal of personal pleasure from calling themselves fans, then complaining about this graphic novel. What is there not to like? You get a bit more of the story of Harry Dresden prior to Storm Front, and you get to actually see how the author sees Harry. Does that mean you cannot continue to "see" Harry as you prefer?? Only if you have a limited imagination. I'd recommend this graphic novel (compilation of comic books) to any Dresden fan.

Book Review: A great new original Dresden story
Summary: 5 Stars

A trademark blend of magic, noir and sarcasm Welcome to the Jungle is a full color example of why Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden is so popular.

A special consultant to the Chicago police, Harry is called in when a man is found dead at the zoo under mysterious circumstances. The brass wants to blame Moe the gorilla, put him down and be done with it. Special Investigations lead Karrin Murphy knows the evidence isn't adding up so she leaves the legwork that she can't explain to her bosses to Harry. After all, the list of things that can choke a man bare handed has to be small, right?

But before Harry can put the monster who did this down, he has to dodge great cats under compulsion spells (to kill him, of course) and supernatural dog assassins, save the girl and save the gorilla.

Spiked with humor, fast paced and fabulously drawn, Welcome to the Jungle is a welcome addition to the Dresden mythos and a must-have for Dresden fans.

Book Review: For a fan of Harry Dresden
Summary: 5 Stars

I love the harry Dresden novels. Liked the tv show but really was much more of a fan of the books. The books always paint such an awesome picture of Chicago but the Chicago that no one knows about. I have to say that they're some of the most fun novels out there.

That being said, when there was a shot to read another Dresden novel of sorts, I took it. This one will keep fans who are waiting for the next book in the series satisfied for a little bit longer. It's hard waiting for Jim Buthcher to write the next novel so having a comic book to hold me until then works quite well. The story and characters are true in keeping with the story line. They look like how you would imagine they would look. The art is decent if not good. I'm happy with this and very happy with the story.

Book Review: Good stuff
Summary: 5 Stars

Jim, as always, you do an amazing job of putting us in Harry's shoes and taking us everywhere from the Field Museum to the Winter Court. I applaud you. That's why I'm giving 5 stars. The book is done well, the art is while not superb, it is definitely more than adequate, and the storyline is certainly about Harry at his best. Having said that, AMAZON, SHAME ON YOU. I may or may not have bought a graphic novel, but I felt like that choice was taken away from me when I ordered this book. I went back to look at the order and nowhere does it say it's a graphic novel. Yes, I was disappointed, because I was really looking forward to the next novel. You dropped the ball on this one, and it's no wonder the mob is waiting at your door.
