Book Reviews of The Double Bind (Vintage Contemporaries)

Book Review: The amazing skill of Bohjalian
Summary: 4 Stars

I am always amazed at the skill of Mr. Bohjalian...and this book was no exception.
Taking on the issue of mental illness is never and easy task and is I would imagine always under critical review by professionals as well as their clients.
I gave this work to a friend of mine who is a clinical psychologist and she became so engrossed in the read that she did not pick up the clues that might well have changed her idea about what was really going on. I would not want to spoil the for the reader and so will say no more.
This was another hard to put down novel that I highly recommend to Bohjalian fans as well as any lover of good fiction. It is entertaining and engrossing from start to finish.

Book Review: Whose Reality is Real?
Summary: 4 Stars

Author Chris Bohjalian subtley draws the reader into the world of the mentally ill in the masterfully crafted The Double Bind. The interweaving of characters, setting, and plot elements from F. Scott Fitzgerald's American classic The Great Gatsby both intrigue the reader and hint at the schizophrenic world which the main character Lauren is creating as she is forced to confront the trauma of a brutal attack in her past. Bohjalian's novel keeps the reader on edge, wondering himself what is real and what is imagined. At the same time Bohjalian's characters are a testament to the human will to survive, both physically and emotionally, in the most difficult of circumstances.

Book Review: Don't read reviews before reading this book!
Summary: 4 Stars

I made the mistake of reading a lot of reviews before reading this book: Learn from my mistake! If you delve in deep enough, you will get an idea of the surprise ending in the story, and it will be ruined for you. It is a great book, by a brilliant, gripping author. If you can suspend disbelief long enough, and just go along with the story, the payoff will be worth it.

Book Review: Inside Look
Summary: 4 Stars

"The Double Bind" does a great job integrating the Great Gatsby characters in a believable way... the concept made me think of Sena Jeter Naslund's "Ahab's Wife" and Moby Dick, but with a surprise. Bohjalian's depiction of mental illness from the inside also reminded me of "A Beautiful Mind." Great story, great concept, very well told.

Book Review: Gripping
Summary: 4 Stars

I found myself drawn into the world of the protagonist and wanting to know more about THE GREAT GATSBY. I enjoyed the story because the mystery unfolded along with her obsession with finding out about the photographs. Many surprises as you learn the truth. I found myself as obsessed as the heroine with finding out the truth.
