Book Reviews of The Dive From Clausen's Pier: A NovelBook Review: Well Drawn Emotions - Perfect Ending Summary: 5 Stars
This book grabbed me from the first chapter. It had been sitting on my "to read" pile for awhile as I was afraid it was going to be a depressing read. It wasn't. The story begins with a terrible accident and tells of an accelerated maturing of a young woman as a consequence. The emotions are so well drawn that you feel their veracity. The setting, in Madison Wisconsin, made the book a personal look back. The ending was perfect, not contrived as I often feel about the endings of books. The book's ending left the reader with the right closure to the story and characters.
Book Review: A Beautifully-Written Book Summary: 5 Stars
Carrie is the narrator of her own story in this heart-wrencher. She has spent all her life in Madison, Wisconsin, and is engaged to her high school sweetheart. She has begun to have doubts about their future together when he (Mike) has a diving accident which leaves her numb. She doesn't know what to do and finds herself having trouble relating to his family, her family, and all her life-long friends. This story explores questions of loyalty, love, friendship and sacrifice. And, the ultimate recommendation, it made me cry... a lot. And I can't stop thinking about it.
Book Review: Incredibly insightful Summary: 5 Stars
I loved this book. I've read it twice now (which I never do)and will probably read it again. I've read its bad reviews and I don't believe that the characters are predictable or cliché (if they are, that only adds to their beauty). Just because Carrie doesn't start what her critics call "a better life" in New York city, doesn't mean she's not a protaganist with which the reader can identify. She's simply a girl who's growing and learning what she wants. I really identify with her decisions and believe Packer writes of realistic thoughts and scenarios.
Book Review: Larger than Life!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Such a simple premise turned into a wonderful struggle that touched me deeply. It's so rare to find a book that you can enjoy AND makes you think on an emotional level. I found myself cheering for each character, hurting with each feeling and shocked with each decision. All the usual words of "heartfelt", "deep", "emotional" and add a million more can explain this book. I think it can be read and enjoyed on many levels...a beach book or a sit down-and-cry kind of book. Since I have a friend who is a quad, the latter was my reading experience.
Book Review: An exceptional book....I couldn't put it down Summary: 5 Stars
I'm from Madison and for many reasons, this book just touched me so deeply. The characters are believable and flawed, but all with pure hearts. It shows true conflict of the soul and how the decisions we make don't define us, that we define the decisions we make. I couldn't put it down and read it one weekend, now I can't stop thinking about it. This is the kind of book that puts your life in perspective and gets you to ask, and answer, those questions that aren't easy, but really help you define what you want to be and where you want to go.
