Book Reviews of The Digital Photography BookBook Review: Highly recommended Summary: 5 Stars
I have recently been introduced to Scott and his approach to photography and writing. I must say that his style is welcomed and refreshing!
So many other writers get involved in esoteric and highly embellished verbiage that it's difficult to get to the core of what they are attempting to say.
I admit that at times Scott's humor is a bit overdone, to the point of obnoxiousness, but with the understanding that every person has their faults, I'll take his style of writing any day!
This book is direct, to the point and gives the essentials needed to get the job done right in as little space as possible. It's amazing how quickly one can get through the book. Scott waists no time on triviality (other than an occasional dry joke). He says what is necessary and avoids the endless and worthless details that others add just to fill the pages to make a longer book and try to justify charging more money.
This is the second book of Scott's that I have and admittedly I am now a loyal fan of his style. I highly recommend this book, although it is likely best suited for the beginner/intermediate or demented-advanced user.
Enjoy!
Book Review: Simple Tips for a newbie Summary: 5 Stars
One of the other reviews complained about the guy's sense of humour. I must admit in the introduction chapter he lays it on thick and it has nothing to do with the idea of the book at all. Just flick through that and get to the detail.
Personally I really liked this book. It breaks into practical chapters (taking pictures at weddings, taking landscape pictures, taking portraits, taking sports pictures) the exact things that people like me are interested in taking better pictures of. That is what it does, it tells you tricks to get better pictures. He suggest some essential items, some straight forward tips, helps you understand why sometimes you're not getting the pictures you want.
This is for a beginner to SLR photography. Not for an experienced photograper. But it's easy to use, easy to read, broken into small sections with a few tips. You will get better pictures after using this book.
He leans a little heavily on Photoshop, but if you really want to take this serious then I guess Photoshop is going to become your best friend anyway!
Now i'm ready for a more advanced book, but this was a great starting point for me.
Book Review: I REALLY like this book. Can't understand negative reviews. Summary: 5 Stars
I think I have 3 of Scott's books, swear by them all, and if they're on a topic I want to learn more about, I'll keep buying them. Practical, to the point, full of many tips that are simple to incorporate and that produce immediate results.
This book arrived a couple of hours before my wife and I were going off to view a friend's Nativity scene collections. Literally hundreds of them from all over the world.
I spent about a half hour with the book before going and learned more about my high end Canon point and shoot than I had in the previous 3 years of owning several versions of the camera.
Although it's great for any digital photographer and any camera, the only problem is that it made me want to run out and buy a digital SLR. (That stays on my "wish list" for now.)
I came home from that first trip with 50 of the best pictures I've ever taken. Only had to toss 3 or 4 of the roughly 50 that I took and those were because I forgot to turn off the flash.
Unless you're a highbrow, know-it-all professional wannabee, if you want to improve your digital photography and get the most out of any camera, get this book.
Book Review: Great book for Beginners and higher Summary: 5 Stars
I am new to photography and finally purchased my first DSLR camera (Canon50D). Now after reading the entire manual, I wondered what I got myself into. It has all these great features, but says nothing about how you should use them to take great pictures. So my next step was too look for a book that would introduce me to digital photography using a SLR camera. Well this book delivered. Scott makes the book easy to read and even makes it easier to pick up the camera and start shooting. Though his humor and intellect, I've managed to stop using all the auto settings and to started to shoot in the other modes that the camera has. He provides instructions on how to use certain features on a Nikon or a Canon which makes it relative to the camera you are using. He even gives suggestions on equipment and work arounds if you don't have the "professional" equipment. Each chapter is on a separate type of photography, and gives you the practical answers that anyone can understand. I loved this book so much, that I ended up buying the next 2 books in the series.
So if you are just starting out, or want to take you skills to the next level, then this is a great book.
Book Review: a book every photographer should own. Summary: 5 Stars
The Digital Photography Book, Volume 1
I sell my work to magazines and I have found that this book is one of the best for the working photographer that I have in my library. It doesn't tell you how your camera works, or about f/stops or shutter speeds. What it does is to help you when you are on a shoot. As Scott Kelby explains this book, he says that it is like your on a shoot with someone who is a real big time pro. You turn to him/her and ask, "how is your camera set up to take this shot?" And then explains how you should set your camera. Each page is a lesson, with a picture at the top of the page, and the lesson below as to how the results were arrived at. I love this book. I have taken pictures since 1958 and never had a good flower picture until I read this. I sell my work to magazines, and I have found that this is a good book to own. In fact I have purchased a second copy for my son, and have advised others about the value of owning this book.
Strong statement? Not if it helps you the way it helped me.
