Book Review: Revolutionary for me!
Summary: 4 Stars

This is my experience with the Diet Cure. I believe there is so much to offer in this book and I agree with almost everything she has written except maybe the word "CURE". Let me explain.

I KNOW that my problem is Sugar, Refined Carbs and Milk. I know these addictions affect my brain and moods and PMS and weight and acne and everything!! But, these foods are like heroine to me. Sometimes I feel as addicted to them as the need to breathe. After a month or so of going clean and abstaining from these foods (lots of withdrawals) I start feeling great! But, when I slip and start eating junk or sweets even once, I get right back in the same rut, totally addicted again. It is a cycle I have repeated more times than I can count.

I have known for a long time that the need for these foods isn't just hunger, but something missing in my brain. I experience an almost uncontrollable urge for certain foods that has very little to do with physical hunger. I used food everyday to medicate such things as anxiety, depression, frustration, irritation, PMS, etc. I knew food was related to my brain but knowing that didn't fix the problem. I've tried hypnosis, homeopathy, acupuncture, cleanses, counseling, tons of vitamins, and I've read every book I can about willpower and positive thinking. (I finally got a prescription drug to help me cope during severe times of anxiety that I could not control.) These problems as well as food addictions just wouldn't let go unless I abstained for a long time from anything unhealthy, which is very, very hard. Then, I still didn't have the willpower to conquer my addictions and I would go back to my comforting foods during periods of stress.

I felt incredible when I stuck faithfully to diets such as South Beach or Paleolithic (Cave Man) and when I did a Candida cleanse (extremely strict diet) it was like being put into another body and mind. I was the person I wanted to be. BUT - as most resolutions usually go, my efforts would be thwarted with getting busy, or distracted, or totally overwhelmed, or giving in to powerful cravings for "just a little" and in a matter of days I would be right back addicted to sugar, carbs, milk, refined grains and junk. HOW COULD I STICK TO A HEALTHY DIET?

What Julia Ross introduced to me was the miracle of Amino Acids to fuel my brain. For me it was a missing link, a way to feed my brain the chemicals I was missing so I could actually stick to a strict diet. The diet was the most important part for me, but sticking to it was near impossible without the added help of the Amino Acids. Basically the book promotes a diet very similar to South Beach; healthy proteins and fats, lots of vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, fresh fruits and totally abstaining from junk food of ALL kinds especially sugar and refined carbs. She also highlights other common foods such as wheat or milk that cause many people problems both mentally and physically. The difference in this book is she gives you the knowledge of how Amino Acids can help replenish your brain with the chemicals you lack that make you feel such an overpowering need for junk food!!! For me this is revolutionary!

The first time I tried a Theanine/Gaba supplement, I was feeling extremely overwhelmed and frustrated so I took 3 pills. In an hour I felt like I had taken Valium. It was the most powerful thing I have EVER tried regarding nutrition and supplementation. I believe that if you need an Amino Acid to help your brain produce chemicals it is lacking, taking the supplements can be very powerful. If this isn't your problem then you will not feel the same results.

That being said this program is NOT EASY!!!! For me the use of supplements and Amino's alone did nothing until I was willing to give up my food drugs. For me the diet is the CURE and the Amino Acids are the vehicle to stay with the cure. The Amino's, vitamins and minerals can help make that a possibility for those of us who are hopelessly addicted to unhealthy foods, or damaged from years of poor nutrition, but it's not easy. The book will not make preparing healthy meals cheap and convenient like ripping open a snickers bar. It isn't easy to remember to take supplements everyday. It isn't easy to plan ahead and prepare healthy meals and snacks. It isn't easy not to cheat. I don't care how many Amino's you take, there will be temptations EVERY SINGLE DAY. Our society is full of unhealthy eating choices that are offered and often pushed on you by well meaning friends, family and co- workers. While Amino's can stop strong cravings, they will not completely stop the desire for the foods you love: ice cream on a hot day, warm cookies with a glass of ice cold milk, Homemade white bread slathered in Raspberry jam, or Party food during the Super Bowl. This book cannot produce miraculous results without tremendous effort and determination. For me, sticking to the diet was the most important component to feeling great and when I slipped I had cravings and mood swings even while taking all the Supplements and Amino's. The Amino's helped curb my cravings but alone they were useless to defeat my mood and weight problems without the drastic change in eating. I tried doing all the supplements without changing my diet and it had little effect on my health or mental function. For long term results it takes long term changes.

There are no calorie restrictions, counting or measuring of foods. This was excellent, but the list of foods is definitely restrictive to what normal Americans eat on a daily basis.

It takes trial and error to get the supplementing right and find out exactly what foods trigger you. Her recommendations for supplements had me taking handfuls everyday which is expensive and difficult to be consistent. You must be diligent as you try Amino's because it takes a while to figure out dosing and timing. Some Amino's may make your symptoms worse which means your brain may already have plenty of that neurotransmitter already. For me, getting it right has not been nearly as easy as the book made it sound. For many people it may be best to go to a Naturopathic Dr. who can help you navigate what is best for your needs. There are tests available that will tell you exactly what neurotransmitters your brain needs, but there can still be a lot of adjusting and work before you get things just right. This book also addresses complicated issues of hormonal imbalances, thyroid problems, Adrenal problems, parasites and Candida among other things. While the information was great and I have heard similar things from naturopathic doctors, these complex issues are hard to treat without professional help. I like that she is empowering us with information, but it may be a little complex for shooting in the dark and trying without professional help. I have been told to change my diet by other doctors before and similar supplements were suggested, but reading about it for myself helped me to understand why and gave me stronger resolve to stick to my program. No one has ever suggested Amino Acids in this way which was key to the success I have experienced thus far.

I have not been able to stick to this program completely even with great effort. It is hard to stay focused on the diet and supplements when so many other things happen in life that need attention, but when I fall off and start feeling bad again I have something to come back to. It gives me hope that with practice I can get better at sticking with it and I don't have to feel awful forever. I am able to drop weight while sticking to the protocol while eating as much as I want of foods that on other diets would be strictly off limits. It does work for me when I work it!

This book isn't for EVERYONE! There is no one-size-fits-all approach for health. But I do believe that Julia has knowledge that is very powerful and useful for many, like myself, who feel trapped by chemical addiction to foods. There is a strong connection to the foods we put in our body and the way we feel mentally. There is a strong connection to Amino Acids and their role in producing the brain chemicals every person needs to feel happy and whole. This is a breakthrough in the world of diet and mental health. Is it a cure? I'm not sure I can buy that, but it is a vehicle to get you headed in the right direction.

She has updated this book and it has a new orange or red cover, I would like to read that version because she may have simplified things a bit. I recommend puchasing that version. Good Luck on your journey to wellness!
