Book Reviews of The Devil's Notebook

Book Review: MARVELOUS BOOK. TELLS YOU THE WAY THINGS ARE AS IT IS!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This was a very realistic book. Many people that have strong misconceptions about the true meaning behind Contemporary Satanism are really missing out on the facts revealed by Mr.LaVey. LaVey is a very dynamic individual and he is very realistic about the things modern society can do to an individual, whether he is a Satanist or not. By studying And being a Freemason, this book has truly opened my eyes to what many others restrict you from seeking forth. If everyone were the same, this would be a very boring world. Man has created God and Religion. Why follow the herd conformity of others. One must choose his own path and destiny. You are a God within yourself. I highly recommend that the reader studies the Satanic Bible and Rituals also. Many churches and pulpit pounders are leading millions of lambs into the slaughterhouse. As a Satanist, we DO NOT worship the Devil. WE worship God within ourselves . Everyone has their own God and beliefs. True Enough, but shouldn't you as an individual appreciate yourselves and those who truly love and appreciate you for who you are, and not by the way someone else wishes you to be? To Be, Or Not To Be? That was the question. I AM THAT I AM THAT HAS SENT ME UNTO YOU. This is the answer to that question. Seek and ye shall find. This philosopher's signature lies within the so-called "Great Book". Read and understand what you're reading before you give an honest opinion. Keep searching!!! I am very proud to have just entered my membership in the CoS. HAIL SATAN!!!

Book Review: I know it's Satanism, but shouldn't it be called humor?
Summary: 5 Stars

As any Satanist can tell you, LaVey was a man full of biting wit, iconoclastic insight and, above all, a most astute and adroit observer of human folly and misinterpretation, himself being subjected to the latter more than anyone in recent memory.

In this book, published after two decades of inactivity (to the world of print), LaVey sheds light on many interesting topics, bringing his usual dose of sardonic humor to the printed page.

A particular essay comes to mind when I think of this book- it's called "Hatha Toilet Seat Meditaion," and if it doesn't solicit laughter from you, nothing will. For those of you who are familiar with it, I'm certain you're grinning right now. For those who aren't, read the book and find out why.

Other essays focus on some pretty forbiding topics, and the level of candor expressed by LaVey never lets us forget that while the media may have portrayed him as several things- none of which were especially flattering- we will continue to respect him for the insight he shared with us, remembering the first time we read the "Satanic Bible," a book that for many of us described the thoughts we'd always thought, but never knew anyone else did.

So, when you read this book, say to yourself with a sigh of gratification, "Hail Satan!"

If you're a recently self-discovered Satanist, you have my best wishes for your continued learning and exploration.

Book Review: Please Allow Me To Introduce Myself...
Summary: 5 Stars

After a 20 year literary hiatus (after the appearance of "The Satanic Witch" in 1972) Anton LaVey re-appeared in print with this collection of essays. Although his groundbreaking "Satanic Bible" was first published in 1969, many Church of Satan members recommend this book as a starting point for all those who would like an insight into the mind, philosophy and world view of the Satanic Church's founder. Throughout his writings, Anton LaVey remained uncompromising and ultra-cynical about the actions, stances and attiudes of the human animal: namely its perpetual propensity towards masochism, hypocrisy and righteousness. These essays do not disappoint whatsoever in this respect, and one of the sub-texts forming a literary common-denominator across the collection is LaVey's expose of the fact that people not only enjoy being tricked, conned, ripped-off or otherwise manipulated, (both in their religious and political affiliations and alignments, as well as in the consumerist realms of fashion, pop-music, etc.),but that they will willingly pay for the privelege over and over again. LaVey formed his Church of Satan on an anti-herd agenda: championing Individualism and Creativity over group, herd, societal constraints and mass-indoctrinated thinking - and these essays are brilliantly executed cornerstones of that Satanic Philosophy. The inclusions on Satanic Magic provide a particularly refreshing and pragmatic contrast to the pseudo-Christian, mystical tradition of Mainstream Occultism.

Book Review: What this is only the tip of thee iceberg!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Well, if you really enjoyed this book then like me I know you will have started reading from the back! Yes how can you understand what he has written unless first you contemplate the favorite quotes on the pot before you proceed. In this wonderful book he leaves many ideas for the home practionner to decide upon but that's what it's all about!!!! Many people may view this as evil but it's far more exciting then that goddammed bible(oops!). If one realizes that there is a Zen world for them then you too might be interested in purchasing this book. You know it's hard to tell people the truth about their saviors when in reality we recognize all the lies and deceit so we must have fun with the dark side. Don't worry stange things always happen but after reading this book I realize it's only me that causes this ( with a little help from my friends!!!!!) To those thinking this justifies murder buy a bible or something, as for the rest of us who love the art of interpretation and visualization of real magick then this might be that spiritual guide that will help change your life forever as it did mine. In fact if you can't write a book after then you obviously didn't read the book properly!! Better luck next time, NOT!?!

Book Review: LaVey's first kick butt book.
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the first collection of LaVey's short essays, ranging on a broad range of topics and makes an excellent companion to his later book, "Satan Speaks!" Like the later book this earlier book gives LaVey's opinions of everything from society, politics, religion, history, science, philosophy, metaphysics, technology. LaVey was certainly a well read guy. And in reading his works, you might find yourself saying, "Hey, that's right! I've seen that myself." or, "I never thought of it that way before!"

Here is a guy that has the guts to come out and call a spade a spade.

And like "Satan Speaks!" this earlier book will make you roll with laughter.

His essay "Hatha Toilet Seat Meditation," makes a good read, especially while in the bathroom! The other good one for reading while in the john is the essay about Fernando DePlancy (what a weird guy -- but hey, it takes all kinds!) They will tickle your funny bone.

LaVey also discusses his and others' peculiar fetishes and interests and also about his experiences as a carny.

This book will make you wonder, ponder, upset you, frighten you, and make you laugh. But it is not a boring read.
