Book Reviews of The Devil's Labyrinth: A Novel

Book Review: Entertaining
Summary: 3 Stars

This book was pretty good - not great, but it definitely had a few creepy moments and a page-turning plot. I read a few of Saul's books a long time ago, and while I recall one of them as being particularly frightening (_The Right Hand of Evil_), this book was more of an entertaining mystery than genuinely scary (though there are also a few "gross-out" parts, too). I wish that there had been more to wrap up the end, since as it is felt rushed and with some pretty major loose ends. Still, it made for a quick, fun and easy read.

Book Review: not the best of John Saul's
Summary: 3 Stars

I have read quite a few of John Saul's books and I must say it's not the best. Especially in the end he repeats himself a few times which was rather annoying. If anything, you should read Manhattan Hunt Club instead, it's so much better..

Book Review: Disappointing
Summary: 2 Stars

This book is simply disappointing.
I kept reading it expecting to have several open points to be explained at the end. No satisfactory explanation is presented. No twist, no surprise, no chill.
Do not waste your money, check it out from the local library and try a few chapters if you want to waste your time reading it.

Book Review: Not a good book to be stuck with
Summary: 2 Stars

This is the first John Saul book that I have ever read. I felt that the story was poorly manipulated and the characters were flat. The plot was silly. Overall, I felt this was a very rough outline that was not well thought out.

After I finished it, I discovered an error on the back of the book. That's sloppy.

Book Review: Truly laughable
Summary: 1 Stars

I hate to write a review like this, but since the discussion board on John Saul's website is permanently disabled (I'm guessing other people feel the same way I do), I feel obligated to post something on here. In the past year or so, I have read at least 20 fiction novels. I've been partial to Orson Scott Card, Bernard Cornwell, James Rollins, and Robert Ludlum lately. At the airport two weeks ago, I saw The Devil's Labyrinth sitting on the shelf. I was traveling to Germany on business and wanted a book for the long flight from the U.S. I thought I'd change things up by trying something by John Saul.

I don't know what I was expecting, but I knew within the first 20 pages that the writing style was going to be too simplistic for my taste. But, the opening was interesting enough, so I kept going. About 150 pages in (the book is around 300 pages long with large print), I wondered where the hell it was going. At the 200 page mark, I felt like the only thing labryinthine about the book was the convoluted story line, but I had already read 2/3 of it, and since I'm not a quitter, I trudged on. By God, I wasn't going to let this book get the best of me. Well, as the ending (I hate to call it a conclusion, because there just wasn't one) started to unravel (literally), I was left scratching my head.

In hindsight, the book felt like it was written in about a week. The dialogue was elementary, the characters were undeveloped, and the storyline unwound into a complete mess. Never before have I felt like I wasted $7.99 on a book, but if there was a way for me to erase any memory of this book and get my 8 bucks back, I'd do it in an instant. This was easily the worst piece of fiction I've ever read.
