Book Review: An Excellent Emotional Account of the Mine Fire

I don't know how anyone could rate this book less than 3 stars. I grew up in the Philly suburbs and I remembered as a kid the news accounts of a town with steam coming out of pipes and the worried looks on the face of the people being interviewed. About a year ago on the internet, I came across a C-Span Book Event that featured Joan Quigley. I was hooked! I found myself yearning for details about the mine fire history. Not only did I learn about the anthracite coal region history but I was facinated by the turmoil between neighbors and between families and the uselessness of local, state and federal goverment. Joan Quiqley went from 1866 right on up to the 80s vividly describing a town of people who desperately tried to hang on to their homes and way of life. After reading the book, all the playmakers (good and bad) have stayed with me.
