Book Reviews of The Darkest Evening of the YearBook Review: Dean Koontz Dissapoints Again Summary: 2 Stars
I've been a lifelong fan of SOME of Dean Koontz's work. His books are very hit or miss for me. I have loved some of his books and I have loathed others. This one was not the worst but it was definitely a disappointment.
Koontz spends pages developing a character who dies suddently and unceremoniously half way through the book, but barely explains the background of characters who are integral parts of the story! It seems almost elementary - he inserts such great care and detail into the beginning of the book (with some of his fantastic descriptive writing I have come to love), but the end just seems slapped together. The entire confrontation with the "bad guys" only lasts about a page and then it's over in a very abrupt and cheesy manner (I love fantasy/sci fi, but come on!).
The whole book is a big chaotic and hard to follow in general. If you want to read Koontz, take a look at Life Expectancy or the Odd Thomas series. I highly advise steering clear of this one!
Book Review: Not My Favorite... Summary: 2 Stars
Let me first say that I love Dean Koontz. I've read a good many of his books, and they usually never fail to mesmerize me. This one had me right up until the ending, which is, I have to say, disappointing to say the least. He spends so much time weaving the tapestry of these characters. The build-up is wonderful. However, the ending was very anticlimactic, in my humble opinion. It was over far too quickly and easily. There was no dialogue between the the parties at all, no suspense...nothing. It was almost as if Mr. Koontz got tired of writing this particular novel and just rushed the ending to get it over with. The ending didn't fit with the rest of the book. All that detail and background info to just have everything resolved and wrapped up in a neat package in just a few pages. It didn't make sense to me, and not worthy of Koontz.
All in all, a decent read, but not one that I would recommend. I liked Intensity a whole lot better.
Book Review: Not his best effort... Summary: 2 Stars
I have been a Dean Koontz fan for many, many years. I believe I have read every one of his books, except for the most recent 2 or 3 that are not out in paperback yet. I have to say that the beginning of the book, and up until the last chapter, I was enjoying the mystery of it and the development of the characters and plot. However, the ending totally threw me off, and I hated it. I won't give it away here (don't know if anyone else did in any of their reviews). It's not that the end result was unappreciated (good guys win), but the way that Koontz got there was just too unbelievable, even for a work of fiction. It was quite a stretch, and to be honest, unworthy of him, and I feel it could have been done so much better another way. It's as if he just ran out of time before the publication deadline and haphazardly threw in the easiest ending he could think of to tie it all up. Sorry, not buying it.
Book Review: Typical Koontz Summary: 2 Stars
I do enjoy reading Dean Koontz - I have been reading him since I was a teenager -first I read was Phantoms when I was like 14. He is a quick, entertaining read. Too formulaic though. The WASP couple - he with the inability to commit but the desire to do so, throw in for him green-beret training. She with the emotionally scarred background/childhood. A touch of supernatual for Biff and Buffy [name changes with every book, but the characters are exactly the same] and there you have it - novel 1-2-3. I have to admit he is a lot better then Grisham! More often than not - weeks after reading a Koontz, I cannot even recall the main characters names. Several times over the years, I have started what I thought was one I hadn't read and 1/3 to 1/2 of the way through, I realize I have read it already.
Book Review: Disappointing End Summary: 2 Stars
Let me begin by saying I have read alot of Mr. Koontz's work (43 titles). They helped me pass alot of free time on my last deployment. I enjoy his books and am enthuastic about suspending disbelief. In this book I found it easy to accept the relationship of the protagonists and antagonists. What disappointed me were the last 4 pages. I was astounded at the bold authorship on the 5th to last page and could not wait to see how he resolved the situation he had written. My hopes were dashed on the next page however, as he wrote a infantile recovery from the situation he constructed. I'll keep reading his books, but this book was ruined for me by the ending.
