Book Reviews of The Darkest Evening of the Year

Book Review: i'm a dean koontz fan
Summary: 3 Stars

i have most of the books ever published by dean koontz and nearly all of the audio book versions as well. i have this book as an audiobook and i cant seem to get through it.... i come back to it on occasion and i leave it on my zen but there are better books that seem to take up more of my reading and listening time. i like dean because he portrays Christians in a positive manner and seems to hold to a more traditional view of the united states.

on this book, well... dogs, serial killers, secretive personal history, wierdos and some supernatural stuff... it should work but not yet for me, maybe because i have seen most of this stuff before in his other books.

Book Review: Smart Doggie Power?
Summary: 3 Stars

I usually love Koontz's many books, but this one was a bit below par for him. I found myself just getting invested in one character, then POOF, he's killed off! So along comes another character that we learn all about, his hang-ups, his past, his love life, etc. Then POOF, he too is killed. Along comes... Well, you get the drift.
The ending is anti-climactic! The evil-doers are killed without a big chase scene or anything! Simply just done away with! Where's that glorious ending???
Enough about intelligent dogs and far-fetched stories about them. Please, Mr. Koontz. We all love dogs like you and Gerda do, but we like other types of stories too!

Book Review: very interesting and a wild ride
Summary: 3 Stars

Amy Redwing is a survivor of a haunted and terribly violent marriage, and she has made a new name for herself. Her boyfriend, Brian is also haunted by his past.
One day Amy rescues a golden retreiver from a violent drunk. The goldens name is Nikki, just like Amy's dead child.
Meanwhile, Brian is getting threatening emails from his ex, Vanessa. Venessa uses their daughter against Brian and she hates the little girl she named Piggy.
Eventually everything comes to a head. The rescue mission for dogs, the little girl who needs a loving home, Brian getting her back and the sadistic Vanessa and her boyfriend.

Book Review: good suspense
Summary: 3 Stars

Dean Koontz is a wonderul writer of suspense and thrills. I enjoy a good mystery. The darkest night of the year gets off to a rather slow start. The main charaters are developed well if not slowly through the book. It is the thrid part of the book where things really get moving and maybe seem maybe a bit too hurried. sort of like ok I need to fill x number of pages and now I can wrap this thing up. Still all in all it is a good read. If you are a fan of dog lover mysteries though this isn't the book for you. Better dog lover mysteries are written by the likes of Sue Henry and Susan Conant to name just two.

Book Review: The Build Up is Great, the Ending is a Dud
Summary: 3 Stars

I read this book and Breathless just a few weeks apart from each other and felt they both had the same downfall. Dean Koontz spends so much time developing his characters and the story that he seems to run out of steam when it comes time to wrap things up. The ending came across as very anticlimatic to me with too many loose ends.
