Book Reviews of The Darkest Evening of the Year

Book Review: Vintage Koontz
Summary: 4 Stars

As a dog fancier, it was the "golden" that caught my eye, but Koontz, as always catches your attention, and then rarely allows you to catch your breath. Interweaving the dog rescue org. with his characteristic expand your realm of belief and character development makes for a good read.

Book Review: A different kind of Koontz Novel
Summary: 4 Stars

Great book, different from others he has written. I can't imagine the difficulty he had writing it, as it was written in the aftermath of the loss of his dog.

Great job!

Book Review: Not very complicated plot, lot of info about rescue dogs
Summary: 3 Stars

I have not read a Koontz book for over five years but a relative passed this one off to me in an informal family book exchange.

What did I think?

Having just added a rescue dog to our family the week I started reading this book I had some interest in one of the over-arching theme of the book: the tragedy of wasting the lives that fills our world, especially those of our pets.

Koontz hits his other basic themes such as good vs. evil and the good cannot flee evil - they must confront it.

But, was it a good book?

Yes and no (thus the 3 stars).

I read it quickly - Koontz's writing style remains breezy and easy to digest. But, the evil sociopaths were so over the top that I felt that they weren't even interesting. Their prisoner is so saintly that she is equally over the top.

The extended lecture on the need for adopting dogs gets old after a bit. Maybe it's a preaching to the choir thing, but I was already converted to this concept before I picked up the book.

The most interesting character by far is a post-modern hitman who names himself after a series of postmodern characters and writers (Billy Pilgrim, Tyrone Slothrop and others).

So, in sum, same old themes, one really interesting character and a lot of info on dog adoptions.

Book Review: What happened to the climatic finish?
Summary: 3 Stars

OK. I've got to begin by saying I'm an unashamed dog lover. So the combination of another book by Dean Koontz and this one about dogs seemed like something too good to miss.
The book began great. Amy Redwing got me onboard right from the start and as the pages turned I became more engrossed in this tale of dog rescue and mystery. The writing is, as usual from this great author, fantastic. The storyline very engaging. I couldn't put the book down once I got started, but what happened to the finish? Get to page 450 and it seems like Mr Koontz just wanted to finish the book in double quick time. After all the build up, the tension, the intertwined storylines and characters...it all just abruptly ends! What happened?
A good book, but could have been better.

Book Review: Not my shot of tequila
Summary: 3 Stars

I guess I'm a little late with my comments about this book. But, I have to tell you there were many parts in the book that were difficult to read on a suspense writer's level. So here goes.

Murder, mayhem, moments of transcendence; explosions, fire starters, cold-blooded killers. Connected and disconnected. Unnatural & supernatural. Temporary reincarnation; human into foresighted Golden Retriever. And The Darkest Evening of the Year is in transitory purgatory. The last three pages were filled with redeeming factors. Entertaining but not my shot of tequila.

I'm the author of the psyche drama/comedy KISSING FREUD and the action/adventure DUBROVNIK. You can preview and purchase both here on amazon.com.
