Book Reviews of The Dark Tide

Book Review: Fast-paced, deception, lies, conspiracies, plot twists... excellent!
Summary: 4 Stars

One morning, while at her yoga class, Karen Friedman, along with everyone there, learns of the bombing at Grand Central Station. At first, Karen feels horrible for the people involved in some way. Until that same horror starts to sink in - her husband had taken the train to work that morning after bringing the car in for servicing. Trying not to panic, she tries to reach him - but he's gone. The first bomb was set off in the first two cars, and Charlie always sat in the first car. There's nothing left of him to identify - only part of his briefcase was found.

A year later, with the kids away for the night, Karen is determined to watch the documentary on TV. Just when she watch anymore, reaching for the remote to turn it off, whose face does she see? But it can't be ... can it? Is Charlie really still alive?

Nearly a week goes by when Karen finally decides she needs to talk to someone about this. She won't tell the kids - they were just as devastated as she was when Charlie was supposedly killed. Recording the documentary on a DVR, she takes it to detective Ty Hauck.

She had met Ty previously when he came to her home. On the day of the bombing, he had been at a case of hit and run, and Charlie's name and number had been in the kid's pocket. Ty's about the only one she can trust.

And that's when the fun begins. Ty takes a leave of absense, determined to find answers for Karen. Conspiracies, lies, deception, Karen can't believe her husband of 18 years was even involved. But the biggest shocker is actually finding Charlie and hearing his confession. Only, it doesn't stop there.

**Great book! Had a hard time putting it down.

Karen is a strong woman, in mind and body. Determined, she wants to hear the entire thing from Charlie's mouth, face-to-face - she and their children deserve that much. Once she latches on, like a pitbull, doesn't let go.

Ty has lived a hell in his past, one that he actually couldn't get passed, until he met Karen. But with Karen in his life, he moves forward, looking to the future, feeling emotions deep down that he never thought he'd feel again. Just as determined as she is, he breaks laws he'd sworn to uphold to get to the bottom of the whole matter, and it nearly cost them their lives.

From bombs to hit-and-runs, to connections in between... From plot-twist to plot-twist, conspiracies, lies and deception, this one had it all. There was a little romance put in, but I felt it was more like an on the side type of deal. While I did feel something between Karen and Ty, it wasn't as strong a spark as it could have been. I also felt that when the action starts, the dialogue suffered a little - well, enough that I can't give this one a full five stars.

Regardless, great mystery, great plot, enough action to satisfy, and emotions roll throughout. Excellent read!

Book Review: Andrew Gross Comes Into His Own!
Summary: 4 Stars

Andrew Gross assertively steps from under the shadow of his mentor, James Patterson (with whom he 'co-wrote' 5 best-sellers) and now his 2nd solo novel - "The Dark Tide" - is nominated for Best Novel at the ITW Thriller Awards.

The novel begins literally with a bang - in the form of a Metro North Train that is destroyed by a terrorist bomb as it pulls into NYC's Grand Central Station. One of the victims is hedge fund manager, Charles Friedman. Rather than following the terrorist attach angle, Gross puts the focus squarely on to Friedman. The reason for this is the fact that his wife, while watching a TV-Documentary on the train blast sees an alarming sight - her husband, Charles, emerging unharmed from Grand Central!

Why has Charles Friedman chosen to be presumed dead and why was his name and phone # found on a piece of paper in the pocket of a hit-and-run murder in CT? Detective Ty Hauck is assigned to the hit-and-run case, but he is soon approached by Charles Friedman's 'widow', Karen, and their stories seem to converge to the point where a much larger conspiracy is at hand.

This above-average thriller is the start of what will hopefully be a recurring Ty Hauck series. Hauck is gritty and interesting with a haunted past that drives him. As he and Karen uncover the layers of Charles Friedman's other life - the surprises keep coming and don't stop until the satisfying climax. Well done!

Book Review: Lots of twists and turns
Summary: 4 Stars

I'm always amazed about a book that has such a wide variety of reviews. There are so many people who give it a 5 and then so many giving it a 1. It makes we wonder whether I will like it or not.

Even though it had many poor reviews I took the plunge and was glad I did. I needed some light summer reading and this book provided it. I hadn't heard about Andrew Gross before and so I was not familiar with his work.

My interest was captured from the very first chapter. I found myself wanting to know what was going to happen. I was also interested that this book talks about an Investment Banker gone wrong. Seems like it is taken straight from our headlines of the last couple of years. As someone who lost money to a poor investment (one recommended by a "top" investment counselor) that I was steered to by someone who wasn't completely honest I found myself wanting to know what Charlie had been up to with his Investment Banking Firm.

I enjoyed the book and was not sad that I downloaded to my Kindle. If you enjoy light reading, some intrigue, lots of characters and many different locations you will also enjoy this book. But if your nervous, be sure and read all the reviews before making a decision to buy. Personally, I'm glad I got the book.

Enjoy!

Book Review: Excellently plotted thriller
Summary: 4 Stars

This thriller offers first-rate suspense, mostly because the plot is very well crafted and presents a mystery that is challenging to unravel. The stories of many mass market paperbacks are easily figured out in the first few chapters, so The Dark Tide is a pleasant change of pace.

Readers will want to pay close attention to the small details that author Andrew Gross tosses out in the early stages of the book, as many foreshadow the excitement to come, and it is quite a ride. I don't want to say more about the story line because the chief attribute of this novel is the range of surprises, large and small, that pop up when a reader least expects them.

The characters are good overall, although I didn't especially resonate to the female lead, who fluctuates wildly between being the helpless damsel in distress and the resourceful heroine who holds up her end of the action. The male lead, a detective named Ty, is well drawn and likable, and several of the secondary characters are very convincing as people you love to hate. If the female lead were stronger I would have given this novel five stars.

Overall, this is an exceptionally good thriller that stands out in a crowded genre.

The Dark Tide
by Andrew Gross

I received this book from Library Thing as an Early Reviewer copy. As I am a fan of James Patterson's books, I was anticipating this author Andrew Gross to tell a very good story and in an exciting way.

Right off the bat this book engages the reader and holds your interest from the explosive beginning to the terrifying end.

We all dread the thought of not saying a good "good bye" to our loved ones. Karen Friedman says farewell to her husband who decides at the last minute to take his car in for repairs and take the train instead to work. Later on in the day, it finally becomes clear to her that her husband is on the train that has just exploded. Her husband is gone...and her life changes.

Within a short time, Karen is threatened by two men and becomes very confused at what or who Charles Friedman was involved with. Is her husband really dead?

With the assistance of Ty Hauck, a local detective following the leads of another case, they join forces to solve the mystery of Charles Friedman.

This book is recommended for those who like a thrilling mystery and I look forward to Andrew Gross's next book.
