Book Reviews of The Dangerous Days of Daniel XBook Review: First book in a great new series for Young Adults Summary: 5 Stars
Daniel X is a new sort of icon for Young Adult readers - in this era in which we're swimming in books for Young Adult women (mostly vampires and werewolves), finally we get a hero for the boys! Daniel X is an alien hunter - figuratively and literally. That is, he hunts aliens, and is himself an alien. His family came to Earth hunting the dregs of the universe in their attempts to save Earth from being overrun by various alien scum. Unfortunately, Daniel's parents were killed when he was quite young, leaving him to fend for himself.
But he does alright, because he has lots of cool superpowers - including the ability to create, from his imagination, his best friends and his family.
In this first book of the series, Daniel takes on a high level alien while we learn more about him and his life - he also goes to visit his home world. Because the book is fairly short, and there is a lot of action, I don't want to get too much into the plot so as to avoid spoiling it. It appears that a lot of people feel this is a "weak" novel, lacking in "reality," which is unfortunate. See, it's this thing called "fiction" - specifically "science fiction," which means that the story is MADE UP and has bits that AREN'T REAL IN OUR UNIVERSE. A large step to take, I know, but for those who understand what "science fiction" means, I think they'll enjoy the story. I noticed much the same problem when people were reviewing the first Maximum Ride novel - somehow a lot of them missed the fact that there were going to be more.
At any rate, I liked the book - it is a quick and fun read, something light between some of the heavier stuff I've been reading lately - and I think it is great that there is finally something out there designed to appeal to Young Adult men. Give it a read.
Summary of The Dangerous Days of Daniel XThe greatest superpower of all isn't to be part spider, part man, or to cast magic spells--the greatest power is the power to create. Daniel X has that power. Daniel's secret abilities -- like being able to manipulate objects and animals with his mind or to recreate himself in any shape he chooses -- have helped him survive. But Daniel doesn't have a normal life. He is the protector of the earth, the Alien Hunter, with a mission beyond what anyone's imagining. From the day that his parents were brutally murdered before of his very eyes, Daniel has used his unique gifts to hunt down their assassin. Finally, with the help of The List, bequeathed to him in his parents' dying breath, he is closing in on the killer. Now, on his own, he vows to take on his father's mission--and to take vengeance in the process.
