Book Reviews of The Daily Five

Book Review: Great Literacy Block Book
Summary: 5 Stars

As a second year teacher teaching a combined 2/3 class, I was looking for a solid approach to my morning literacy block. I found that and more with this book, combined with the Cafe Book. This book is perfect for helping new teachers guide their students towards reading independence. It was easy to implement this, even though I started in January. Law now requires that I meet with students who are having difficulties in small groups on a daily basis. This program allows me to do this, and gives me the tools to document my interventions. I Love this book and the companion Cafe book, and plan to continue using this program, no matter what elementary grade I teach.

Book Review: Great Teaching Tool
Summary: 5 Stars

The Daily Five is an easy read, which is different from most professional books about literacy. It is easy to understand and follow, even for a 2nd year teacher like me. I read 1/2 of the book the first day I recieved it, and was implementing the Daily Five within a week. It truly allows the students to take more ownership of their learning, and the 5 daily things the program has the students do every day encourage authentic learning. I don't have 1/2 as much to grade, and even my most reluctant readers are excited about reading during the daily 5! I'm excited about the changes that are happening in my classroom, and so are the students!

Book Review: Great Pedagogy!
Summary: 5 Stars

I picked this up over a year ago based on word of mouth. I read it once and took a tepid liking to it. I talked it up with others, reread it, and warmed up enough to give it a go in my classroom. WOW! Call me a convert. I currently teach 4th grade and after using this "process" in my classroom this past year I am a believer. This way of "doing" reading is well researched, easy to understand, and can be modified easily. This is more kid based than teacher based, so if you want to sit behind your desk and grade worksheets stay away. If you want to make a drastic, amazing difference in reading ability and interest, however, grab this one!!!

Book Review: the daily 5; fostering literacy independent in the elementary grades
Summary: 5 Stars

WOW!!!...is all I can say. I am on my 14th day of "training." I can see a lot of pride in my students. THEY take the ownership of their learning with this fantastic program. I have found that I do, indeed, spend much less time maintaining those students that I am NOT currently working with. No "gentle reminders," "pulling cards," "deducting time from recess," etc. They are so proud of their ability to use stamina (a big word they really like to refer to)and build their mental memory.
This is my 13th year of teaching. I highly recommend using this. It is very successful with my first graders, even though others felt it wouldn't.

Book Review: An essential book for teachers doing centers
Summary: 5 Stars

This book was given to me by our Principal. Many of us were feeling overwhelmed by center management. We were so busy making centers filled with little pieces that were getting lost, and trying to keep track of what everyone was doing, grading it, and making sure that they were getting the things they needed to be good readers was overwhelming.

This book made the idea of centers easy to do and management of the centers, manageable! It is a quick read and easy to put into place. I started this concept in the middle of the year, and was amazed at how much my kids responded to it, and how much more time I had at home!
