Book Reviews of The Daily FiveBook Review: An excellent book Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this book looking for inspiration and hoping that it would contain useful ideas for organising my classroom. I was not disappointed. Gail Boushey and Joan Moser have come up with a well-researched, well-tested, clearly-presented system that will be adaptable to most elementary classroom situations.
The "daily five" are: read to yourself, read to someone, work on writing, listen to reading, and spelling/word work. The authors clearly explain how to model and support these skills so that students can work on each element for extended periods of time, leaving the teacher free to work with small groups and individual students.
I will most definitely be using their system as the basis of my own classroom management this year and am looking forward to observing how the daily five will work in my situation.
Book Review: Daily Five Summary: 5 Stars
WOW! I have been teaching first grade for 23 years and have been looking for a way to really engage my students in literacy activities while doing guided reading. I wanted them to really become independent during that time so that I wasn't answering their questions about the activities and trying to read with others. The Daily 5 has allowed me to do just that. Reading to self and others, writing, word work and listening to stories have taking the place of reading tickets that have to be created each week. The noise level in my room is now a hush with children working the whole time. I have even been able to get through my small groups with no distractions. I started this program mid way through this school year and I am so pleased with the results. Great program for any age.
Book Review: The Daily Five--a great book Summary: 5 Stars
This is a fantastic book. I have been teaching for 15 years now, and I finally have successfully implemented a classroom full of independent readers and writers who work quietly without disturbing anyone. I have always wanted to be able to send my kids to any part of the room to read or write, but they have done more playing than working. This book has shown me step by step how to achieve this. I teach Kindergarten and my students are reading to themselves for 30 minutes without stopping, playing, getting up, moving around the room, or interrupting me. It is amazing to see. This book gives you all the tools to implement a balance literacy program. I could use this for any elementary grade I might teach.
Book Review: Applicable to middle and high school Summary: 5 Stars
Though this is a primary-oriented text, I found it working wonders in middle and high school. This is the MOST POWERFUL structure of creating reading and writing independence I've every seen. I've adapted this to my high school classroom, making it the Daily 3: reading to yourself, reading to someone, and working on writing. My older students needed the structure of reading and writing and I NEEDED the structure to conference on their work and process daily.
I thought I was going to get to teach process and content from this book, but the by product was exceptional classroom management self-regulated by my high school students - all this I credit to the "2 Sisters"!
Book Review: Easy to Follow, Great Advice! Summary: 5 Stars
The sisters come up with some of the best teaching strategies I have heard of to this day. I have fully integrated this into my daily routine, and the students love it. More and more my students have become readers (in a school that isn't known for good reading scores), and I can truly see them becoming better readers right before my eyes. With the design of this system, I have time to go and confer with students that need more one-on-one time than others. Teaching first grade is a crucial time for young readers, and this approach to reading time has given me an excellent strategy to tackle it with ease. The kids love it, I love it, and I can truly tell it is helping all of them!
