Book Review: Thank God Jackie doesn't...disappoint!
Summary: 5 Stars
If it were not for Siri L. Mitchell's excellent storytelling abilities in The Cubicle Next Door, I would never have gotten past the good parts (the first 209 pages) to the excellent parts (pages 210 until the end.)
Mitchell's main character Jackie Harrison, a civilian employee on a Colorado military base, is forced to share her office space with office newcomer, Lt. Col. Joseph "Joe" Gallagher, a grounded pilot.
This action not only tests the lifelong "Jackie doesn't do" rules the heroine has imposed on herself (things like "doesn't date," "doesn't downhill ski," and "doesn't like SUVs"), but allows her to channel her confused emotions into a gutsy blog, The Cubicle Next Door.
Just as in life, this fictional blog affects far more people than just Jackie. Soon (to her horror), she finds that Joe, the man she doesn't want to love, but does, is one of her blog's regular readers.
As much as I ended up loving it, I struggled through the first 209 pages, not for lack of interest on the author's or the main character's parts, but because I kept waiting to hear some type of sermon. (I'm new so I didn't know Christian fiction could thrive without it.) Before page 210, I misinterpreted some of Jackie's good deeds as petty and self-righteous.
It's on page 210 that I'm so glad I hung in for the first couple hundred pages because Mitchell gives readers a scene where Jackie's faith sparkles as she explains her views on John 3:16. Though it's an interesting interpretation, it's here that I realize that any sermon that doesn't eventually share the message of God's love is just...preaching.
So for the first 209 pages, I'm interested and I care. But from pages 210 until the end (page 240), I love and I want to cheer Jackie on no matter what.
With a smile and a sigh, I say that this was an excellent read.

Afterthought:
I realize that Mitchell's character Jackie has something that many of my own characters sometimes lack--definite opinions. Jackie has an opinion on everything, which can be a little off-putting for someone like me (a half-introvert, half extrovert), but humanizing for Jackie's character. As a whole, the whole story works.
