Book Review: Thorough, intelligent, inspiring and beautiful.

Anne Willan has gifted us all with a truly wonderful tome of french country cuisine. It is of the same quality as her other: La Varenne Pratique. The entries reflect the true approach to the informal cooking of the country - beautiful creations using elements which naturally occur in each area. The recipes are interesting, truly "do-able" and completely delicious. The photos are beautiful and the narrative is accurate and inspiring. I always look for the best of the best. I watch movies that win awards. I drive an award winning car. I eat in Michelin rated restaraunts. When I discovered this book had won the James L. Beard Prize in 2008 for the Best Cookbook, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it, and I was not disappointed. It's beautifully laid out and the recipes are easy to follow. I've made two things from it so far and both were very good indeed. Buy this book, You will be delighted!Book Review: best French recipes ever

As an amateur French chef, I've cooked from Elizabeth David to Madeline Kaman, Julia Child, Jacques Pepin, Samuel Chamberlain, et. al. Willan has clearly cooked her way thru their pages and more. You can find the historical references in almost every recipe. She has taken the best of French culinary tradition, reduced it like a fine sauce and produced an eminently cookable and deeply delicious compendium of the best that France has given the world's table.Book Review: One of my favorites.

This is one of the best french cuisine books I have. It is well written and the recipes seem to be fully tested. I just wish it had more pictures but the paper quality and the print type are great. My review for the book is 5 starts but for amazon it may be only 2-3. I think they are droping the ball when it comes to packing the books for shipping. The book came a little bit damage with the jacket torn and the corners bent. I guess you can have all?Book Review: Country Cooking of France

A beautiful book. Easy to read recipes with both metric and cup measurements. The photographs are delightful and the written information on the areas and local food is first class. A great cofee table book for everyone to enjoy. I just wish I could spend a year in the Country and sample the food first hand!
