Overall, it is a great book! It teaches many basic cooking techniques and then provides recipes for practice. If you already know the basics, just skip the instructional pages and head straight to the recipes. Many of the recipes have variations so you can match the recipe with your tastes. And you don't just get recipes - you get explanations, illustrations, equipment advice, and brand recommendations for your ingredients.
There have been some comments from others about the narrative provided. This is ATK's formula - they explain the creation of the recipe to you in depth instead of just giving you the final result. I appreciate this level of detail because it prevents me from making the exact same mistakes when I think I can skip a step or substitute an ingredient. Odds are, they tried it too and there is a reason why the recipe is written the way it is written. Sounds logical, but I can't be the only person guilty of trying to improvise (ok, it's really trying to take shortcuts but I am being nice to myself here) once in awhile!
In buying cookbooks since I bought my Kindle, I have struggled with whether I want to keep buying the old-fashioned paper books for the beautiful pictures and simple navigation. But this was a no brainer because of the price! I found that I love being able to search for a recipe while I am at the store because I found an ingredient on sale or produce that was exceptionally beautiful that day. I can find the recipe that used that ingredient and get everything else needed to make that dish. Plus, I highlighted brand recommendations so I can quickly reference that information when I am shopping.
OK, it can be difficult to navigate through this book as opposed to flipping through your favorite cookbook. There is an active table of contents, but so far I have only figured out how to get to the beginning of the chapter from it - you cannot go straight to a specific recipe. You can search, but a search for chicken will get you 1037 results. I solved this problem by reading through the book once and highlighting anything I knew I wanted to try making. Scrolling through that list is easier for me when I want to find the recipe again. But, come on - it was FREE! Should we really complain?
