Book Reviews of The Complete Roman ArmyBook Review: The Single Best Reference on the Roman Army! Summary: 5 Stars
If you are going to buy one book on the Roman Army - this should be that book!
Historian Adrian Goldsworthy write authoratively and in great detail on every aspect of the Roman Army, including the Republican Army, the Professional Army, the life of the Roman soldier, the Roman Army at war, and the Army of late Antiquity.
This book, which is a great read and is lavishly illustrated with maps, photographs, timelines and charts, provides unparalleled insight into the armies of the Caesar's as well as all aspects of warfare through the late 3rd Century.
Book Review: Terrific Summary: 5 Stars
This book is just about as complete as it could be, and it is still readable. It covers every period of the evolution of the army, and includes great detail on the soldiers' lives outside of battles. The pictures and diagrams were excellent, and there were more than enough of them. My only request would be for a little more information on the army of Late Antiquity, but I don't think that the book was too lacking in this area to make it a serious problem. No matter how well-read you are on Rome, this book will teach you something new.
Book Review: Another Winner from Goldsworthy Summary: 5 Stars
If you've read other Goldsworthy books nothing in here will be a shocking revelation in the field of Roman studies, but the graphic presentation is top notch and the writing easy to follow. Even if you're already a serious student of the Roman military this is a good book to just sit back with and read casually. My only complaint is the binding of the book, which does not appear suitable to rough use (such as being thrown in backpacks or bent during reading).
Book Review: The Complete Roman Army Summary: 5 Stars
For anyone interested in a detailed discription and development of the Roman Army, this book is a must. The book explainse the aften complex command structure of the army and provides order of battle diagrams which are very helpful in understanding the army. The photos and drawings of forts, camps and the dress and weaponry, including the changes thereto, is wonderful.
Book Review: The complete roman army Summary: 5 Stars
I thought this book is very good for beginners who are interested in roman army and equipment. it is nicely divided into 4 parts, and the terminology is clearly explained with photos or illustrations. There are also small surprises where specific campaigns are discussed in a 2 page summary. i will definitely recommend this book for beginners
