Book Reviews of The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson

Book Review: Brilliant..
Summary: 5 Stars

As a few have stated already, a lot of Emily Dickinson's poems appear simple on the surface. Don't let the simplicity or brevity fool you, boiling underneath the metaphors of Dickinson's poems are some of the most beautiful visions I've ever read. Intelligent, thoughtful..haunting are all words I'd use to describe her poems. She has quickly vaulted to the top of the list of my favorite poets along with William Blake and Edgar Allan Poe.

And speaking of her poems, there are plenty. All of them in fact, in chronological order allowing the reader to see the progession in her poems. This is a great book at a great price to be able to own all she has written.

Since her poems have no titles, there are two invaluable features included at the back to help aid the search for the desired poem. One is an alphabetical subject index, with words and lines linked to poems with which they belong. The other index includes the first lines of all 1775 poems.

An excellent all around souce for all your Emily Dickinson needs. Enjoy.

Book Review: Don't Waste Your Money...
Summary: 5 Stars

On any other collection of Emily Dickinson's verse, because this is the one you're going to end up with, trust me. Beginners to Ms. Dickinson's poetry might be a little intimadated by this thick, thick book of untitled, sequentially numbered poems. But the thing about Dickinson's poems is that, while a lot aren't readily accessible, the ones that are (most of which invariably find their way into the smaller collections of her work) are so riveting that her readers inevitably end up wanting her complete collection on hand. Which is why they should just suck it up and buy this book in the first place.

If you've never read Emily Dickinson, read some of her more famous work online or in the library first to see if you're interested. If so, buy this book immediately. If you already have another collection of her work and consider yourself a fan, sell whatever other collection you have and buy this one.

Book Review: The best we have -Read her and be enriched
Summary: 5 Stars

Emily Dickinson is one of the greats of world poetry. A language, a style , a world of her own. She writes memorable lines slanted to the heft of her own cathedral tunes. Success counted sweetest on her dying ear was distant sounds of triumph burst agonized and clear. She loved to lick the valleys up in skies of molten blue .She died twice before her death, and yet remained to see if immortality would reveal another event awesome as these. Intoxication was the going of an inland soul to sea, past the houses past the headlands into deep Eternity .
She gave us lines which live in our minds, and come back to us time and time again, rhymes off - rhymes too which take flight as poems of broken wings.
She enriches our life. She exalts us.
Read her and be enriched, the fragrant longing of a spinster's kiss.

Book Review: The inspiration to boost my life
Summary: 5 Stars

Emily Dickenson has made my life actually worth while. Everytime I hear one of her magnifesent poems I feel life surge through me. My life is a bit of a downer, I'm in depression a lot. Her poems have helped me. I am a poet myelf, and a writer so its inspirational to hear her poetry. I hate to hear people say she's a terrible poet because its not true! Her passed was a bit sad, to my opinion, but she lived to be the greatest poet I will ever know! I don't know any other way to explain her great poetry, its almost like trying to tell why you like shakespears plays. They are just so much. If you want to feel true inspiration, I recemend Emily Dickenson. Anyone who doesn't like Emily Dickenson or disses her doesn't know poetry and I pitty them.

Book Review: Not What Your Femi-Nazi Profs Say It Is!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've spoken to any number of people lately who are totally turned off to Emily Dickinson by their feminist professors and vow never to open her again. I tell them that they are making a mistake. Dickinson appeals to me -- a wicked, unreconstructed, non-feminist, white male -- because she writes passionate, pithy, witty poems that are not restricted by the sort of asphyxiating mediocrity that binds Adrienne Rich et al. Even if Dickinson is imprisoned in a Women Writers course, she should not be confused with the company she thereby keeps. She's a wonderful poet, and like Jane Austen, doesn't need any special pleading to be placed among the greats.
