Book Reviews of The Complete PersepolisBook Review: Emotional, gripping, and unforgettable. Summary: 5 Stars
Here is the first paragraph from my personal book review (published on my personal blog, see profile for website info) on Marjane Satrapi's brilliant comic strip of memoirs:
"picture. A few words in a book. A flashback. That is all it takes for our memories to be triggered from their dormant existence in the quiet corners of our mind. It can be nearly 30 years later and much may fade away in this life but some memories are pertinacious. No sooner had I opened the first page of Satrapi's "Persepolis" that I remembered the first day returning home from school in Iran......"
I absolutely loved this book. I read it in 6 hours. I am moved and touched by the moving comic strips telling her compelling story. I will never forget. Thank you!
Book Review: fascinating, a must-read Summary: 5 Stars
i am not someone who typically enjoys 'cartoon' strips, but i could not put this book down and read it fervently. i received this book as a gift after having visited iran a couple of times, and i was interested in learning more about the history and culture. what marjiane captures of her childhood, and her evolution into adulthood, is thoughtful, amusing, heart-breaking and at times hilarious. at times she softens the brutality of her words with the humor of amusing caricatures, or sometimes the simplicity of what she sees as a child is made more stark and tragic by her drawings. her personal journey and her family's experiences during and after the revolution really give one pause. i would highly recommend this book, it is rich with humor and emotion.
Book Review: PERSEPOLIS by Marjane Satrapi Summary: 5 Stars
Persepolis, originally published in two volumes, is an autobiographical graphic novel by Iranian expatriate Marjane Satrapi. It chronicles her childhood in Iran during the Islamic Revolution, her coming of age in Austria, her return to Iran and her second departure, to France, after her failed marriage.
Satrapi's black and white art is thick-lined, simple and spare, and it fits the book well. The vignettes of everyday life she presents are fascinating, because of Western unfamiliarity and because of her tremendous openness and honesty.
Ultimately, Persepolis is an engaging, many-layered work that gives an honest, revealing view of a way of life that most Westerners are extremely unfamiliar with.
Book Review: Graphic autobiography Summary: 5 Stars
This book was a gift to my husband from my sister-in-law. He loved it enough to recommend it to me.
It is told in graphics with captions and labels and narration. The author is a woman from Iran showing and telling about her experiences growing up during the Iranian Revolution. It was amazing. I learned a lot and ventured out to learn more as I read. I even, GASP, asked my history teacher husband to give me some lessons on the time period. That NEVER happens.
The descriptions of family and friends is an education in itself, so many perspectives. The book is everyone's coming of age, yet it is supremely unique. I loved everything about it. Looking forward to finding the film version.
Book Review: Surprise hit Summary: 5 Stars
This was a required novel for my "Feminism, Creativity, and Social Change" course. When I first received the graphic novel, I was entirely skeptical. I haven't read comics since I was a young child (yay for Archie Comics). My mind also went to the stereotypes associated with grown adults who read comics. Alas, once I began the book, I couldn't quit reading!
Overall, it was entirely enjoyable and all together informing (sadly I did not know of many of the described events). It was certainly more interesting than any history book I've read in my academic career. Great read; even better to buy Complete Persepolis, so that you don't have to run back to the bookstore to buy the second volume!
