Book Reviews of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Business StatisticsBook Review: This book's rating is "seasonally adjusted"... Summary: 2 Stars
...which means it really should be a 1 star.
Let me explain the "seasonal adjustment". The other reviews are right -- the book was edited by a complete idiot. Questions that seem simple enough ["what are the odds of choosing three blue blocks in a row?"] become laughably obscure when suddenly the "explanation" involves things completely out of the blue, like references to "your opponent." Huh? My opponent? What does an opponent have to do with picking three blue blocks in a row?
Frankly, your only opponent here is the editor. While the first three chapters are simple and clear, by about chapter four, the editing goes completely off the rails. Its almost like the editor spliced two separate books together using his "merge documents" function in Word and couldn't be bothered to hire a temp to proof the result.
But my score is "seasonally adjusted" up to two stars because, despite everything, I actually learned something from it. If you want to know what about a dozen of the most common stats terms mean, (many of which on your Excel spreadsheet) then you can think of this book as one of those "tourists' foreign language phrase books", only instead of the foreign language being Italian or Russian, its stats.
After all, most of us just want to walk into our company's research department, and speak enough of the local stats patois to haggle for a monthly market analysis equivalent of a rug without being charged for a camel. The book skips the theory and the arcane symbols (mostly) and just cuts to the chase. Within a weekend you will know what the heck your boss is blathering about when she talks about a z-score, and, if she asks you to seasonally adjust sales figures, then this book can help.
In fact, if you're the sort of person who doesn't mind a challenge, and can live with only one out of three examples being where they are supposed to be, or heck, two plus two equalling whatever the editor had for breakfast, the challenge can even be fun.
But all others: stay VERY far away, and consider this rating a minus one.
Summary of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Business StatisticsBusiness and marketing professionals have to answer tough questions. "How much do 20-to-29-year-olds in New York spend in restaurants?" "What's the potential market for a $1,200 stereo system?" "Where can I find customers for a home manicure service?" Statistics can be intimidating. How do you use data to determine the direction of your group or product? What are nominal and ordinal variables anyway? In The Complete Idiot's GuideA (R) to Business Statistics, Dr. Sunny Baker gives readers a step-by-step guide to choosing, using, and interpreting statistical analyses for business. The author approaches statistical evaluations as concepts, focusing on the data business people need to interpret and put together, and not on the arithmetic, symbols, and calculations alone. Covering tendency, variables and distributions, this title shows how to use this data for business including sampling, generalizations, analyzing data, and correlation theories. Using real business scenarios as example, The Complete Idiot's GuideA (R) to Business Statistics becomes a handbook for real-life business and marketing professionals.
