Book Reviews of The Comfortable Home: How to Invest in Your Nest and Live Well for Less

Book Review: Excellent Must Have Book
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is excellent. Whether you are having a home built to spec, are planning to decorate a new tract home, or are re-decorating your existing home, you really should pick up this book.

The authors help you determine, organize and categorize your needs by using a notebook. They explain how to
* develop a logical plan,
* then make suggestions on what categories of information should be in the notebook,
* how detailed your measurements should be, as well as what should be measured in each room,
* how and why to divide the notebook up by room,
* what to consider in each room,
* and then give guidance on moving forward and implementing your plans.

The authors cover the "details" - that make a room. Details that spell quality, that you yourself can add to a room.

The authors focus is on making your home comfortable; what I picked up from the book, in addition, is not only the comfort focus, but the control we can exercise over how others see us, by how our home is arranged and accessorized. If our home and its decor, gives visitors to our home, insight into our status, life-style and backgrounds, let's use our decorating skills to create positive impressions about us, our habits, and our choices in life.

The authors give ideas on how to determine what you like, where to find inspiration, how to bring that inspiration home for your notebook, how to organize all these thoughts in that useful notebook, what categories of information need to be in your notebook, to finally carrying out the actual changes. It is a process-oriented book - they make suggestions, step-by-step on how you should organize your notebook, to getting out and finding what fits best.

Each step is well-explained. They cover everything when it comes to decorating. In fact, their book title tells it all - it is all about "The Comfortable Home" - and how you create it.

Some of the topics covered in this book are: color, color schemes, what schemes work and why, and how to carry them out (should the wall be beige or the sofa ??, things like that.), how to select fine furniture, finishes, how to take care of your items, room arrangements for entertaining, selecting art and displaying collections. Tips on getting organized, small living spaces and how to work with them, how to `unite' all elements in the room, the math of style, etc.

There is a wealth of information in this book - I didn't know what I was missing in the overall picture of "re-doing" a room, until I picked up this book.

After the organizing chapters, which help you sort out what you have, and what you need and how to determine order of priority, etc., each room in the house is then dealt with in detail.

I highly recommend this book; even if you have been re-decorating your spaces for ages, as I have been, I think you will learn something from this book. From Chapter 1, onward, you get the chance to become an active participant in the organization of your own re-do, because the process, for you, begins there.

This book is well worth the price.

If there is a "bible" for redecorating, in this world of ours, then this one is it for me.
