Book Reviews of The Color of Light: Commissioning Stained Glass for a Church

Book Review: Good effort with a difficult task
Summary: 4 Stars

The title of this book hints that it might answer a monumental question; What does somebody considering a stained glass commission need to know? I purchased this book hoping to find a document that I could offer to a committee to answer those preliminary questions. Given the almost endless answers to that question, the author does a fairly good job of delivering an answer. She covers all aspects of the craft including design, materials and techniques to the extent that could be expected, and in sufficient detail to give a layperson a general understanding of the possibilities. At times, however, I feel as though too much information and terminology is presented. I also feel that a bit of the historical information is more academic than is necessary for the concise answer (and more than most committees would want to know), but it is interesting none the less.

The majority of the beautiful photographs in the book are of contemporary work and, as such, I often grab it as a reference. It does not provide as many photographs of the evolution of style as I thought it might. In the end, I am not sure I would hand it to a church committee, at least not without a disclaimer that their windows need not be as contemporary as those illustrated in the book.

So, does it answer the initial question? Yes, but it is the VERY long answer. I would reccommend this book to anyone interested in contemporary glass for the photographs alone. The book is beautifully laid out and presented. It is a great addition to my library, but it is not the quick synopsis of commissioning stained glass that I had anticipated.

Summary of The Color of Light: Commissioning Stained Glass for a Church

Mediating light, intensifying it, softening it, fracturing it into a myriad of colors, stained-glass windows are a part of the intricate fabric of church architecture. For more than a thousand years, people have expected churches to contain and celebrate this ancient art form. But when faced with the awesome responsibility of providing stained glass for a church--whether in a new building or an old one--where do you turn for advice? In this wonderful new book, stained-glass artist Sarah Hall provides a simple and complete guide to stained glass in a church building for architects, building and renovation committees, pastors, liturgical designers, consultants, and anyone who appreciates the beauty of stained glass. The Color of Light will help you or those you work with to learn more about the materials, processes, and techniques used to create stained glass; to appreciate quality in its art, design, and manufacture; to effectively communicate your goals and desires for a stained-glass project; to manage a full-scale stained-glass project from planning through installation. Youll also find a brief history of the use of stained glass, an explanation of how stained glass creates a fitting place for liturgy, and 90 full-color photographs celebrating this beautiful, ancient art form.AWARDS:Catholic Press Association 2000 Book Award, honorable mention, in design and production
