Book Reviews of The Civil War: Strange & Fascinating Facts

Book Review: Strange and Interesting facts found while researching the Civil War.
Summary: 4 Stars

Great read, read it in a day. What odd things happened in those times and were put on record for us to find these many years later. Fun and filled with fun facts.

Book Review: A little disappointing
Summary: 3 Stars

As an avid reader of Civil War material, I was hoping for a little more from this - not sure what my expectations were going in, but there was not enough new information to make the purchase seem worthwhile. This book probably suits the average "buff" who is seeking to broaden their general knowledge of some less well known facts.

The more voracious Civil War reader will find little new material to justify the purchase. One exception may be the chapter dealing with the Rains brothers, Gabriel and George, who were the Confederate explosives experts. Their genius with explosives, especially the torpedo and "coal bomb" is an amazing story and is well-told.

Book Review: Watch out
Summary: 3 Stars

Many of these charming stories have factual errors -- small ones, but they occur frequently. For instance: Count von Zeppelin did not see his first balloon over Richmond in 1862; he did not even come to the US until 1863. The story of the young Confederate named Culp dying on Culp's Hill also errs in saying it was his father who owned Culp's Hill. Sloppy history. If you use a story from this book, fact-check it from another source.

Book Review: Not bad for the price
Summary: 3 Stars

As an avid civil war reader I was a little disappointed at the amount of really new material. Most of the stories will be familiar to civil war buffs. I agree with the reviewer who mentioned the story of the Rains brother as a notable exception to this. That was truly a fascinating story, and one I was not aware of until I read it in this book.

Book Review: Great little gift for the money!
Summary: 3 Stars

My hubby LOVED this book in his stocking this Christmas. It is very entertaining! My only issue with it was the quality of the item - the paper was not cut well and looed ragged. Having said that - it was really reasonable...so I may be expecting too much!
