Book Reviews of The Chronicles of NarniaBook Review: Fantasy stories for all ages Summary: 5 Stars
This book contains in one volume all seven of C.S. Lewis's novels about the land of Narnia. They are arranged in chronological order. The seven novels in the order in which they appear are:
1. The Magician's Nephew
2. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
3. The Horse and his Boy
4. Prince Caspian
5. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
6. The Silver Chair
7. The Last Battle
All the novels are good, but my personal favorite is "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe". In my opinion, if you are only going to read one, that is the one to read. It is from this book that I first learned about the treat called Turkish Delight. I loved the concept of the wardrobe which one could enter Narnia through. As a result of this book when I was a kid I always wished that dark closets could lead to another realm. The White Queen was a great villain. She acts nice to the character Edmund when she meets him which makes her seem all the more frightening in view of how vicious she really is. Aslan, the savior of Narnia who is a lion, is a very comforting character. I wouldn't expect a lion to be comforting, but C.S. Lewis manages to make him so.
All in all The Chronicles of Narnia was a pleasure to read and revealed to me an interesting type of fantasy storytelling that was unique and different from the type that J.R.R. Tolkien's works (which I also like) inspired.
Summary of The Chronicles of NarniaThe Chronicles of Narnia have enchanted millions of readers over the last fifty years and the magical events described in C.S. Lewis's immortal prose have left many a lasting memory for adults and children alike. All seven Chronicles are bound together in this new paperback edition (rebranded with HarperCollins logo). The Chronicles of Narnia have enchanted millions of readers over the last fifty years and the magical events described in C.S. Lewis's immortal prose have left many a lasting memory. For here is a world where a witch decrees eternal winter; where there are more talking animals than people; and where battles are fought by Centaurs, Giants and Fauns. Narnia is the land of enchantment, glory, nobility--home to the magnificent Aslan, cruel Jadis (the White Queen), heroic Reepicheep, and kind Mr. Tumnus. All the magic of C.S. Lewis's Narnia, bewitching readers for almost 50 years, is captured for the first time in this splendid deluxe edition, including The Magician's Nephew, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, The Horse and His Boy, Prince Caspian, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Silver Chair, and The Last Battle, with fabulous illustrations hand-colored by the original Narnia artist Pauline Baynes and an insightful introduction by Narnia authority Brian Sibley. Lewis's work has cast a spell over countless readers over the years, so that once we pick up The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, we don't want to stop until we've read the whole series. The Complete Chronicles makes it even easier to keep reading! The seven beloved stories have been arranged in the chronological order in which Lewis intended them to be read. Begin at the beginning, as Digory and Polly are tricked into a strange other world, which becomes, even as they watch, the great Narnia. Return again and again with four other children--Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy--who are to play such a vital role in Narnia's history. Finally, enter the whimsical land one last time to witness the end of Time, and the beginning of something new: "world within world, Narnia within Narnia." This gorgeous volume is absolutely a must-have for current and future Narnia lovers. (All ages) --Emilie Coulter
