Book Reviews of The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health

Book Review: Necessary preliminary
Summary: 5 Stars

This book helps explain the amazing disparity in some of the charts comparing the world's other big countries (all with universal health care) to the U.S. in terms of money spent per individual and quality and longevity of life. The U.S. ranks first--and by a simply huge margin--in dollars spent, averaging nearly $8,000 per person--but no higher than #34 in terms of the health and life expectancy of its citizens. But most readers will find the book of interest--perhaps vitally so--as it relates to their own personal experience. The "China Study" is quite close to the findings and recommendations of Dean Ornish and Caldwell Esselstyn (who is mentioned prominently), but it provides details and explanations that are absent or easily missed in the other studies. Esselstyn, for example, summarizes the most basic findings of "The China Study" but then devotes the rest of his book to recipes. He keeps coming back to the "magic" number--150 as a maximum, or optimal, cholesterol count--and gives recipes for achieving it. For readers who require more clarification, explanation and proof, "The China Study" should be read as a complement to Caldwell's book, which tends to focus on HDL, LDL levels and fats but says little about triglycerides and blood sugar (they're mentioned or, perhaps, "assumed," whereas "China Study" goes to greater lengths in connecting the dots for the seriously curious reader).

Consequently, I'd recommend reading "The China Study," whether as a preliminary or corollary to Esselstyn's study. Also, if it seems reasonable to you that emotional-mental-spiritual factors (i.e. "stress") are a factor in heart disease, by all means go beyond "China Study" and its "off-spring." Ornish, for example, maintains that isolation, or the perception of being isolated from self, neighbor, God ("alienation," it's called in literature-philosophy courses) is a major contributor to heart disease and its outcome.

Summary of The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health

Referred to as the "Grand Prix of epidemiology" by The New York Times, this study examines more than 350 variables of health and nutrition with surveys from 6,500 adults in more than 2,500 counties across China and Taiwan, and conclusively demonstrates the link between nutrition and heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. While revealing that proper nutrition can have a dramatic effect on reducing and reversing these ailments as well as curbing obesity, this text calls into question the practices of many of the current dietary programs, such as the Atkins diet,?that are widely popular in the West. The politics of nutrition and the impact of special interest groups in the creation and dissemination of public information are also discussed.
