Book Reviews of The Celestine ProphecyBook Review: Engrossing! Gripping! Enlightening! Summary: 5 Stars
The Celestine Prophesy and The Tenth Insight (two books combined into one) were recently giving to me as a gift. I had never before heard of these books or of James Redfield. However, I became hooked once I began reading about the fictional ten insights. Over the next two days, I read both books consisting of 475 pages... put them down for a few days, and then preceded to read them a second time. I thoroughly enjoyed Redfield's presentation of his new age spiritual parables. Redfield described these parables within the context of a voyage that takes place mainly in Peru. An exciting voyage not unlike an Indiana Jones adventure. I am not certain if James Redfield truly believes the spiritual philosophies presented in his books, but I have realized that many people have taken him seriously. For example, I conducted an on-line search for these books using the search engine, Google. Many links and websites were subsequently retrieved... some of which negatively compared the ten insights to Christian philosophies. Obviously, the critics of the insights felt threatened. To these people I say... "Jeese... lighten up". The Celestine Prophesy and The Tenth Insight are not meant to be taken literally or intended to replace conventional Christian beliefs (at least I don't think they are). However, the book's new age ideas help open-minded people expand their understanding of their role on earth and of their relationship with God. After all, nobody really knows what lies beyond our current lives. However, The Celestine Prophesy and The Ten Insights makes considering life after death a fun exercise, much more fun than what I have learned to expect based on traditional Christian beliefs. They also encourage us to put mystery and adventure back into our lives in the here and now. Did I say that these books were Engrossing... Gripping.. and Enlightening?
Book Review: Mental Barriers Destroyed Summary: 5 Stars
First I would like to say that when I was first told about this book my friend "Rabbi". He described it to me as a mental healing neccessity. At first I was scepticle of the transformation he described follwing the reading of "The Celestine Prophecy". I soon had the time to start reading and to my supprise, every page I turned through just pulled me further and further into the plot. I know this ahs been published as "fiction" but, the way I was able to use the thoughts and conversations as a comparison to my life, was of undescribable accuracy. James some how was able to mention the perfect phrase or setting at the same time as I was remembering parts of my past that I had tried to forget or at least not acknowledge, bringing these "problems" to the surface. And instead of putting the book down and delving into deep thought on these problems I just continued to read , as the reading progressed so did my inner conflicts. Comforting me when I felt vulnerable, forcing me to be assertive when I needed it and teaching me(without saying anyhing) when and how to use these new techniques I had descovered. Well to make a long story short,.....I read the entire book non stop, not able to put it down(even if I wanted to). James Redfield probably has no idea how his writting has help people change thier lives for the good, but I hope that everyone that reads The Celestine Prophecy at least reads it open minded and not with a desire to pick it apart. The answer is within yourself.....have the courage to find it and be thankful for being shown the way to a mental salvation.
Book Review: Reading between the lines Summary: 5 Stars
If read literally, this is nothing more than a sorta lame fiction story, crammed full of overly-descriptive stuff.
But if read for underlying meanings, it's awesome. I was personally experiencing more and more "coincidences" in my life that could not be explained, and was led to this book by a friend. It sat on my bookshelf for years after i tried reading a couple of pages, then one day i felt moved to pick it up and read it.
Sure, it screams of new-agedness. And i have no problem with that. I had been seeing auras and energy fields for awhile before having read this, so when i got to that part i was like, "whoa! dude! i'm NOT crazy!"... (but then of course, maybe i am and so is this author) Insanity is relative.
In any event, it gave me a start in a different spiritual direction when others had failed for me. I found a good follow-up to be Eckhart Tolle's books, beginning with The Power of Now. This direction has truly been a positive change in my life which has been darkened with anxiety and depression on and off for most of it. It has also helped in dealing with chronic illness and the resulting self-pity.
If you are totally happy in your life, don't bother. But if you're looking for some new ideas, maybe facing some difficult crossroads and challenges, be open to this. Don't pick it up expecting to be entertained by a great adventure story or immediate gratification, as it's just not that. If you want that, find a good action movie full of explosions and exposed bosoms. Listen to the narration going on in your mind, BETWEEN the lines...
Book Review: The Celestine Prophesy Summary: 5 Stars
This book is one of the most excellent books I have 'ever read'!! I read it back '95 when it first came out, and have read it several times since then. My husband and I have read the book together also, like study session, and have done the 'Experiential Guide' and it has helped us throughout our life. So we also highly recommend the 'Experiential Guide', the chapter on the 'Control Dramas' is very helpful to understand not only ourselves but others as well.
The story is classic!! it will live forever, and it will remain in my top 5 books that have guided me and inspired me. I teach motivational classes and recommend it every time, also have given the book to many friends and family as gifts. We also keep a 'loaner' for friends/family that want to borrow it. Time and time again friends/family come back to tell us how much they loved it.
I see how some people here in this reviews have put down both the book and the author, whether it was the story or his style of writing. All I have to say to them is, 'get over your left brain' will ya!!! Not everyone writes according to 'your rules'!!! As I have often said to others, listen to 'What' is being said, not 'How' is being said!! And beside!! this book was in the Number 1 list for a 'long time' in the New York Times and many other book lists 'ALL OVER THE WORLD'!! It has been translated into many languages, all because of the inspiring story!!
This book is beautiful, the author was inspired to write this amazing and eloquent story!! And all I have to say is 'Thanks James Redfield!!'.
Book Review: Be honest with yourself - what kinds of literature do you like? Summary: 5 Stars
I guess for me, as a reviewer of this book, I will comment both from my personal experience with the book, but also more globally.
Personally, I read this when I was a bit younger over a decade ago and can remember not being able to put it down. I was a new psychology student interested in spirituality and good living, good thinking, and the book at this stage of life was like a living Indiana Jones movie. Not many books grabbed my attention at that age (mid 20s) - like this one did. I can recommend this for folks looking for an adventurous spiritual journey of a read - brilliant.
I also think that the split 300+ 1 ratings and 300+ 5 ratings is a strength of the book. It is not a book for all, this is clear - but it is obviously a book that attracts a crowd. I live an expatriate life and have seen this book in all corners of the globe. So, with many 1's and many 5's it presents itself as literature that readers essentially have a love hate relationship with: this is also reason enough for me to recommend this book to readers that like to experience what is out there on offer. I personally enjoy books with such ratings - and like to invest time to see what it's all about.
Let's be honest - if books on spirituality are kind of hocus pocus to you, you may be better off looking at another book. If you like to ponder the energies people radiate and their auras - this may be for you. The book had almost a cult like following. Don't recommend that. Read it, enjoy it (if you can) next book.
For me - a wonderful read.
