Book Reviews of The Caves of Steel (R. Daneel Olivaw, Book 1)

Book Review: Commissioner Julius Enderby!
Summary: 5 Stars

1. Elijah Baley has a son namedBentley and a wife named Jessie.
2. Earth has been colonized by fifty worlds called spacer worlds. The spacer colonies use robots to do their labor. Yeast farmers provide food for billions.
3. Earth's population is 8 billion. Metal domes inclose the humans with about 20 million people per dome; food is rationed; and large nuclear generators provide power to ventilate the air, nourish the food stock, and comfort the humans.
4. People move on fast moving walking strips. People live in small enclose apartments. Sometimes the walking strips have collisions and pile ups happen from time to time, an ugly scene.
5. The people do not go out into the air. Instead, they sun bath in areas of the dome that let the light in. The medivalist want a return to open and free soil. They are tried of being confined to the dome and controlled by the robots.
6. Spacer Ambassor, Roj Nemmenuh Sarton is murder in a spacer outpost outside of New York. Sarton is killed by a blaster discharge point blank and gruesome remains left for the police to dissect and gather. Commissioner Julius Enderby assign Elijah too the case and his part and introduces him to his new partner Daniel Olivaw, a humoid robot. Daniel looks like Sarton. Daniel is programmed with a justice chip. Daniel looks and behaves like a human. Daniel initially functioned as a social robot. However, there are flaws once you know he is a robot, such as, no movement of the Adams apple during eating and his requirement to discard the food after ingestion.
7. The medivalist are following Daniel and Elijah and take every opportunity to cause problems for Daniel. On one occasion they incite a riot. On another occasion chase Daniel and Elijah through the town moving between the walking strips. The medivalist do not like robots. The Medivalist tell Jessie (a secret member) that Daniel is a robot.
8. At first, one distrusts Daniel because he is a machine. Jessie reveals to Elijah that Daniel is a robot. Elijah accuses Daniel of being the killer. During the shoe store riot Daniel threatens to use weapon to suppress the crowed. Elijah believes the three laws, violated by Daniel, but Daniel demonstrates the weapon had no ammunition nor could it discharge a bullet. Elijah does not give up believing the Daniel killed Sarton. Shortenly, after discovering Daniel has a secret food sack, Elijah against accuses Daniel of being the killer; stating that Daniel walked across the open space, hid the weapon in the food sack, passed through the outer city security scanner, and killed Sarton. Daniel refutes the claim stating a robot can not kill a human; it is against the basic engineering circuitry design. Elijah wonders, if a robot can kill a robot. Maybe, the dead Sarton was the remains of a robot. Not a chance.
9. Someone is watching Daniel and Elijah. Both are hiding out in Spacer outpost when Bentley shows up. Daniel and Elijah realize Enderby told Bentley there location. Enderby is become nervous how the investigation is proceeding. Bently was sent by Jessie to determine, if Elijah was safe. Daniel reasons that Jessie sends Bently because she can not be seen. The reason Jessie cannot be seen in public is because she is known Medivalist. Daniel has excellent deductive abilities. At home, Jessie upon seeing Elijah confesses her involvment with the Medivalist.
10. Robot Sammy positionic brain has been erased. Julius accuses Elijah of the robot virtual murder of the old brain. Elijah while escaping the medivalist enters a power plant. It is video recorded and Julius accuses Baley of gather the weapon in the facility. Baley does not tell the Commission of the escape because he knows who the murderer is.
11. Daniel and Elijah arrest the yeast farmer, a medivalist. The yeast farmer throws out Jezebel Baley's name. Daniel finally reveals the plot. R. Sammy delivered the weapon to Enderby. Enderby was a Medivalist with a mission to kill R. Daniel. However, Enderby because nervous and broke his glasses. Daniel analyzed the curvature of the lens of Enderby glasses and the broken glasses in the digital recording, a match. Enderby could not see clear and thinking Sarton was Daniel, discharged the weapon. Enderby was the killer.

Summary of The Caves of Steel (R. Daneel Olivaw, Book 1)

A millennium into the future two advancements have altered the course of human history:  the colonization of the galaxy and the creation of the positronic brain.  Isaac Asimov's Robot novels chronicle the unlikely partnership between a New York City detective and a humanoid robot who must learn to work together.  Like most people left behind on an over-populated Earth, New York City police detective Elijah Baley had little love for either the arrogant Spacers or their robotic companions.  But when a prominent Spacer is murdered under mysterious circumstances, Baley is ordered to the Outer Worlds to help track down the killer.  The relationship between Life and his Spacer superiors, who distrusted all Earthmen, was strained from the start.  Then he learned that they had assigned him a partner:  R. Daneel Olivaw.  Worst of all was that the "R" stood for robot--and his positronic partner was made in the image and likeness of the murder victim!
