Book Review: In The Shadows They Lurk...

I love books about secret organizations -- and I also love books that involve fantasy elements. So I thought that THE BRIMSTONE NETWORK by Tom Sniegoski sounded like a good fit for my reading tastes. And on one hand, yes it was a good read. But on other hands... well... I didn't know quite what to think.
I'll be honest -- book boredom hit me a couple times while going through THE BRIMSTONE NETWORK. And I didn't really know why at first. The storyline was interesting for sure: An organization known for protecting the world from all sorts of evil -- the Brimstone Network -- is suddenly destroyed -- every last member -- dead. And that's when Bram Stone comes into play. He has suddenly inherited the mission to protect the entire world from the evil that would own and destroy it. What ensues is quite the gory romp of magick, blood, monsters, and slight twists and turns in plot to form a decent novel.
About midway -- I started figuring it out. Most of the book wasn't even told from the main character's -- Bram Stone -- point of view. A lot of it jumped around to different characters -- the villains, side characters, characters who end their scene in their own death. The book really didn't get moving along and really figuring out exactly what it was until about that halfway mark hit. And then things started really picking up speed. The writing was crisp and pretty well-done, and Sniegoski does a pretty good job taking the reader into the world of the Brimstone Network. It was just some story structure that really held this one down from being really amazing.
All that aside though, the book really was a decent read. And it becomes obvious that things are building up for the two sequels that have been released. Definitely worth a read -- just don't expect a completely breathless ride.
Summary of The Brimstone Network
Thirteen-year-old Abraham "Bram" Stone has never lived an ordinary life. Home is a monastery in the Himalayan Mountains, where the monks train him in otherworldly fighting skills. Bram's father, Elijah Stone, leads a group called the Brimstone Network, an order of warriors and sorcerers who provide the last line of defense against all paranormal dangers.Bram always knew that one day he'd take his father's place. But that day comes far too soon when a bizarre man named Mr. Stitcharrives at the monastery and breaks the news to Bram: Every member of the Brimstone Network, including Elijah, has been assassinated. Suddenly it's up to Bram to form a new Brimstone Network out of the rubble of the old, in the hope that he can rise to the challenge in time to stop a terrifying threat to humanity.
