Book Reviews of The Brass Verdict: A Novel (Mickey Haller)

Book Review: The Brass Is Worth It
Summary: 5 Stars

Mickey Haller is a criminal defense attorney who knows the truth about his clients. He's recovering from being gut shot in a previous Connelly book when he inherits the cases of a former rival who was murdered. Taking the bull by the horns, Haller sorts the cases and quickly latches on to the most profitable one, that of a Hollywood Studio tycoon named Walter Elliot. Enter Harry Bosch, another of Connelly's characters, although in a somewhat lesser role. Still, the chemistry is good if volatile and the plot never slows down.

What I enjoyed most about this book was the honesty of Haller. So many bad things have been written about lawyers and their motivations that it was interesting to hear their side of the story. And it made me think, which is one of the things I look for in every book I read.

Thus, Connelly had me from the first page to the last, in and out of court as well as on the street. Justice is served in this book, though not always from the bench, which is a reflection of the world in which we live.

Book Review: Great Book!
Summary: 5 Stars

I base my rating on can I stop reading for a break like: eating, sleeping, bathroom visit, etc. I didn't want to put it down, so I took it to the bathroom with me; fixed a quicky TV dinner and ate it while reading, and fell asleep with it.

No book is perfect, so I skimmed the legalese portions when it got too long in the tooth. Would have liked more of the Bosch character... but I enjoyed the book with these minor faults.

The low raters want perfection which ain't going to happen when a human being is the author of a novel or they MUST find fault with any book they pick up off the shelf at the library or buy at a book store.

Compared to some "best seller" authors who live off their past (early novels in their career) good to great stuff (i.e. James Patterson) this was a masterpiece of fiction! Disagree that MC only writes to make money, that distinction is true with Mr. Patterson's newer stuff with his "co-author's" helping him write noncents!

Book Review: Smash up of two series is a true hit!
Summary: 5 Stars

The Brass Verdict by Michael Connelly is his twentieth book and brings together Connelly's two famous characters: Detective Harry Bosch and attorney Mickey Haller. Haller returns to the courtroom after a long absence to take on the case of a Hollywood mogul accused of murder. The mogul's first attorney turns up dead, and Haller is assigned to the case. But it gets a bit sticky when it looks like the killer is now after Haller, and Det. Bosch shows up to "protect" Haller, even if it means botching up his case. I've never read any of Connelly's books before, and I'm not normally a fan of this type of fiction, but Connelly sucked me in from the first page with his masterful dialogue and action scenes. Haller is a compelling character full of hard-won wisdom and surrounded by intriguing characters. Bosch is a bit of a jerk, to say the least, but I couldn't help liking him as well. Connelly creates terrific scenes with tightly plotted suspense. Consider me a new fan!

Book Review: The Dynamic Dueo --Haller and Bosch
Summary: 5 Stars

One of my favorite characters is Harry Bosch, a good-guy LAPD detective with lots of flaws. He's featured in several of Connelly's books including The Lincoln Lawyer and The Black Echo (highly recommended to read as well).

Opening with attorney Mickey Haller back in the courtroom after a two year hiatus. One of the attorneys that Haller would cover for (you know-- sickness, something unexpected happening), is murdered. The Court asks Haller to step in and take over all his cases--one of which is the defense of a studio executive who is accused of murder. The problem is that Haller may be the next target. Enter Detective Bosch who immediately butts heads with Haller. Bosch and Haller have a lot in common and Connelly lets readers in on it for the first time. You know it's coming, but the ride is worth it.

Try one, I'll bet you'll end up getting the rest of the series.

Book Review: An exceptional book
Summary: 5 Stars

The rest of the reviews that I have read pretty much summarize what is in this book. All I want to say is that I always wait with great anticipation any new Michael Connelly book that comes out. When The Brass Verdict came out, I downloaded it onto my Kindle, and promised myself that I would read it slowly so as to get as much pleasure from it for as long a time as I could. Of course I couldn't, as the saying goes, put it down, and read it in about three sittings. It is a book that I would recommend to anyone.

I did recommend it to a friend, who has written and published a couple of novels. When I recommended this book, his reaction was "I read Connelly's books when he first started hitting the best seller lists, but that was when I was writing fiction myself and reading his exquisitely constructed plots always put me in a funk for a couple of weeks after I finished one of his books. Envy, pure envy."
