Book Reviews of The Brass Verdict: A Novel (Mickey Haller)Book Review: The Final Approach Summary: 5 Stars
Michael Connelly has effectively combined characters from two of his books to make an extraordinarily pleasurable book. From The Lincoln Lawyer he uses the main character, attorney Michael Haller. From the Bosch series (17 books) he takes the irascible Harry Bosch, premier detective on the LAPD force. Combining these wonderfully colorful characters into a single plot has been a joyous read.
Throughout the book, the reader is captured by the fast-paced activity, the dialogue, the introduction of ancillary characters and anxiously awaiting the next chapter, and the next et al. It is difficult to put the book down. Finally, as the reader approaches the closing, we are given one conclusion. But wait, there is more, another aspect is revealed. Whoa! Not so fast, one more unbelievable fact is revealed, and behold, the reader sits stunned.
Although a fan of the Harry Bosch character and series, and having enjoyed the Lincoln Lawyer some many months ago, I can recommend without hesitation, this is Connelly's best writing - simply because he has plotted it so well. It will help if you are familiar with the characters, but even on a stand-alone basis, the book is compelling.
Book Review: Loved it--and am already longing for the next one Summary: 5 Stars
I love Connelly's books. Frankly, I think he's one of the best thriller writers in the world. "The Brass Verdict" is just as much fun as everything else he's written, with the proper twists at the end.
Haller, the lawyer Connelly introduced in "THe Lincoln Lawyer" returns in this book. Haller is deeply cynical about his profession. He claims he's hardly ever had an innocent client, and, he notes cynically, everyone lies, especially to their lawyers.
Haller has just had a break from the law because he was in rehab. He was almost ready to take on a case or two when he suddenly find himself almost buried in cases. An old friend, also a lawyer, is murdered, and has left Halley in charge of all the cases he was working on.
Chief among the cases is one involving a movie producer, rich beyond dreams of avarice, who appears to be guilty of murdering his wife and her lover.
And by the way, Harry Bosch makes some unexpected appearances in this book. Also, there is a twist at the end (which, don't worry, I won't tell you about) that may indicate further Haller books.
Book Review: The Lincoln Lawyer and Harry Bosch in One Book --A Sure Winner Summary: 5 Stars
I think The Lincoln Lawyer is one of Connelly's best books, so to see the Lincoln Lawyer, Mickey Haller, sharing the spotlight with Harry Bosch should excite all of Connelly's fans. The Brass Verdict met my high expectations for this Connelly mystery book.
Haller is the main character, and this allows Connelly to build the courtroom case from the attorney's perspective. Haller becomes the lead attorney for the defense of a multi-millionaire movie produce accused of murder. Readers soon learn that a detective involved in the case is Harry Bosch. Bosch and Haller learn that they are two sides of the same coin and clash together on the way to a thrilling climax.
Connelly applies all of his masterful writing techniques during this novel. He may spend a bit too much time on the technical aspects of the courtroom drama, but that is minor. Otherwise this is a flowing, steady story that gains momentum until its final mystery is revealed.
This is a must read for Connelly fans and readers who like a good mystery.
Book Review: Vintage Connelly Summary: 5 Stars
Although I have been a Connelly fan since "Black Echo", I think that "The Brass Verdict" is standard stuff with a lot to recommend it. The best Connelly in my estimation was "The Poet" but everything after has a certain appeal to it, and as thriller/mystery writers go Connelly has yet to fall very far.
Bringing back a recent character in Mickey Haller to work with his best know character, Harry Bosch shows that he is not even close to running out of great story ideas. The plotting, as usual is strong and feeds off the characters and situations as naturally as anything he has ever done. The writing is as expected, solid and fluid with fantastic, and realistic dialogue that jumps off the page.
With such a good read I hesiate to give away too much of the plot, leaving that pleasant discovery for his vast fan base and all the new fans this book is bound to attract. Suffice to say, everything we come to expect from mysteries, and a Connelly mystery in particular, is here. I highly recommend it as one of the best of the year.
Book Review: simply the best, period. Summary: 5 Stars
when michael connelly decided to step into the courtroom drama, he immediately pushed all the other authors in the same genre to the garbage can or dumpster. there's nothing short of everything that would have made a novel working like this two lincoln lawyer series and best yet, this lawyer is the half brother of harry bosch; putting law and order together is a force that nobody could stop. fantastic reading experience. just wish the eyes could be younger and the energy stronger, so i could finished it faster in just one sitting instead of 1-1/2 days.
harry bosch became a quite shadowy figure in this courtroom drama, and he served such supporting role appropriately since the author knew when to make a larger-than-life character to take one step back and allowing his half brother paint the courtroom scenes. michael connelly's writing style is just too reader-friendly smooth and natural, making the reading nothing but like having the best gourmet cooking in the world.
thank you, sir, for giving me another wonderful moment of joy.
