Book Review: A must read classic.
Summary: 5 Stars
I read this book around two months ago and I LOVED it. The book makes you cry, if you're a sensitive person like me. It is simply a melancholic and beatiful story about holocaust, friendship and childhood ignorance. The story takes place during World War II in a concentration camp in a place named Auschwitz. When I first started reading it, I couldn't get into what was happening. But, I caught the rythm of it through the story. I also saw the movie, but in the book you get a more vivid image of what the main character (Bruno)is passing through. Here's a brief summarry of the story's plot. The story narrates a life from a german kid named Bruno who lives in Berlin with his family. His dad, an officer from the SS gets promoted to Commander and they have to leave their old lives and move to another house. Bruno doesn't feel comfortable in their new home because he misses his old friends in Berlin. In the new house, they had a jew servant named Pavel, which Bruno wasn't allowed to share with because he was jewish. Bruno and his sister, Gretel, get into classes with a tutor that teaches them about nazism. Gretel passes through a big change of personality and starts to admire nazi people. Instead, Bruno still prefers reading adventure books and other stuff. Bruno has been seing from the window of his room in their new house a bunch of people wearing striped pyjamas. One day his curiosity forced him to go there and see who this people were, without his parents permission. When he arrives, he sees behind bars a kid about his age, which seemed scratched and tired. His name was Schmuel. One of the things that caught Bruno's attention was the number he had in his shirt, which indicated his prisoner number. Bruno thought it was of a game he played, but then he realized the truth. This is an act of ignorancy by him but in my opinion that's very common when you're a kid. And for the next days Bruno visited Shmuel to give him food and to have fun. Soon they become best friends whitout his parents knowing anything. One day, Shmuel is unhappy and tells him that he doesn't find his father and asks him to come the next day and get dressed with the pyjama to help him find his father. At first he wasn't sure if he would help him but then he agreed to search his father. And Bruno was there the other day cutting the fence to enter to the concentration camp. In the camp, while searching for Shmuel's father, they get trapped in a crowd of jews that were heading to a place. They couldn't escape from there because the nazis wouldn't permit it. Then they were both trapped in a gas chamber, holding their hands. And soon, they were turned into ash.
