Book Reviews of The Bogleheads' Guide to Retirement PlanningBook Review: Can't Get Enough of Those Bogleheads! Summary: 5 Stars
Believe it or not, the Bogleheads have done it again! Only a few short years after the publication of their wildly successful bestseller, The Bogleheads' Guide to Investing, America's number-one, financial brain trust has released another ingenious set of financial rules to live by. The Bogleheads' Guide to Retirement Planning has all the information you'll ever need to know about maintaining the health of your portfolio amidst present and future financial storms. `The Bogleheads' Guide is a must-read for anyone whose goal is to have his/her nest egg intact when he/she reaches retirement age.
The book is written by real investors who manage their wealth according to the investment philosophy of financial rainmaker, John C. Bogle (founder and former CEO of the Pennsylvania based Vanguard Group, a wealth management company with over 1 trillion dollars in assets). Bogleheads live their financial lives according to what their guru has termed the `Twelve Pillars of Wisdom'--tried and true principles for increasing investment profitability over the long haul. Some of these principles are: selecting low-cost mutual funds, carefully considering the added costs of obtaining financial advice from so-called professionals, being careful not to overrate past fund performance, using past performance to determine consistency and risk, being wary of "star" mutual fund managers, being wary of asset size, being careful not to acquire more funds than you can personally manage and holding onto your fund portfolio despite potentially upsetting swings in the market due to cyclicality.
The Bogleheads offer a uniquely agenda-free alternative in a market that has become increasingly bloated with get-rich-quick schemes and advice from trendy financial know-it-alls like Jim Cramer, Dave Ramsey, et al. The Bogleheads' sole desire is share some of what they've learned about investing and the success it has brought them with others. As a previous reviewer noted, all royalties generated by the sale of this book are donated to the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, where John C. Bogle serves on the Board of Trustees.
This guide promises to help readers grow their personal wealth in a steady, financially responsible manner and it goes a long way toward reinventing the idea of investing as a long-term process with measured payoffs that worthy of investor confidence.
Two other books on wealth management and retirement planning that I found to be useful as I planned for my own retirement are John E. Girouard's The Ten Truths of Wealth Creation and Thomas C. Scott's Fasten Your Financial Seatbelt: What A Fatal Plane Crash Taught Me About Retirement Planning. Both books are written by owners of independent wealth management firms, each of whom have 25+ years in the financial services industry. Both books are intelligently written, straightforward, enlightening and can be purchased for relatively cheap.
