Book Review: Finding the Blue Castle...

L.M. Montgomery's 1926 "The Blue Castle" stands out among her novels in several ways. The story is set away from Montgomery's beloved Prince Edward Island, was clearly written for an adult audience, and features the least conventional of her many heroines.
As the story opens, we meet Valancy Sterling, a meek, plain-looking 29-year old spinster, living a hopelessly repressed life under the thumb of her stern clan, sustained only by her love of the nature books of author John Foster and a imagined life in her "Blue Castle." However, when Valancy learns that a heart ailment will kill her in a year or less, she loses her fear of living.
Valancy moves into the house of the town drunk, to care for a dying but disgraced former schoolmate. She consorts with the more colorful characters of her town, including the mysterious Barney Snaith, rumored to be a criminal and worse. Valancy will propose marriage to Barney and move to his island hideaway, there to live life in a real "Blue Castle". Reality eventually catches up with Valancy in the form of a dramatic incident that threatens her independence and her relationship with Barney, leaving her with tough choices to make.
"Blue Castle" is an excellent read. L.M. Montgomery telegraphs the eventual destination of the plot, but the fun as always is in her superb prose, host of interesting characters, and her entertaining delivery of the story. "Blue Castle" is very highly recommended to her fans, and to fans of the Anne of Green Gables series who might be looking for something different from the same author.
