Book Review: The Placebo Effect Explained

I have recommended and/or given this book to almost everyone I know.
I had read books by Dr John Sarno, including MIND OVER BACK PAIN and THE MINDBODY PRESCRIPTION and have studied much of this in previous years, but then I heard Dr Bruce Lipton on a radio talk show and it was just remarkable. I got the book and it is excellent.
If you get this book, and one of Dr John Sarno's books, you pretty much never have to see a doctor ever again, unless you break your leg or get into a car accident. Surely you will never waste money on pharmacuticals and pills ever again. You don't need them.
Humans did fine without doctors and pills for millions of years. The rest of the species on the planet don't need them either.
It is just as Dr Lipton says, from childhood we are conditioned that anytime we feel bad, our parents run and take us to the doctor. Whenever you feel sick or have pain, you are conditioned to go to the doctor, because that was programmed in you from birth.
How many times have you gone to the doctor and felt better on the WAY to the doctor or in the waiting room? Basically, just going to the doctor is enough to make you better, but once you realise this, you don't need to go to the doctor anymore.
Since reading books by Dr Lipton and Dr Sarno, my wife and I no longer go to the doctor for anything and don't need pills or medication anymore either.
First we went from prescription medications to finding alternative treatments like herbs, and now we don't even need those, because it is all placebos and all in the mind.
The fact that the makers of Propecia in their own ads were forced by federal law to publish that 42% of people taking PLACEBOS actually grew new hair on their bald heads shows the PROOF of the power of the mind and what it can do to our bodies!
For EVERY SINGLE pill and medication that exists, in which a placebo trial is done, there are ALWAYS people who get the same results from placebos as they do the actual medicine!
In fact, my complaint has always been that the people taking the "real" pills must also be getting results from the placebo effect if it is a fact that those taking the sugar pill are!
Many medicines now on the market don't do any better than the placebos and in fact, some do WORSE than the placebos, as was just proven in cough syrups against sugar water placebos.
What I wish would be done, is have a THIRD test group that just takes pills and is NOT TOLD what the pills are for or are supposed to do! THEN you can remove the placebo effect and see if the medication actually does what it is supposed to! Also, have a FOURTH test group that is told the pill they are taking will do something completely different than it is intended to do.
With these added test groups, I believe all existing pharmacutical medications would fail miserably.
I would try to look for THE BIOLOGY OF BELIEF in bookstores and could never find it, until I found out it was not put in the medical section, the book stores put it in the "new age" section along with the books on witchcraft and UFO abductions.
In fact, I don't like the cover of the book at all, because many people DO judge books by the cover (and what section the bookstores put the book) and I think a lot more people would be helped if the book cover was not so new age looking, and the word "miracle" wasn't on there.
I understand COMPLETELY if anyone has doubts about this book and it's contents based on the cover and the fact it is sold in new age sections of book stores.
Had I not heard Dr Lipton speak first on a radio show and had saw the book first, I would never have bought it based on the impression the cover gives me.
But I assure you the book is completely based on medical science by someone that has actually worked and taught in cellular biology, and even in cloning research way back in the 1960s!
Read this book, and if you still have doubts, read the books by Dr Sarno and get a "second opinion" from another good doctor. One who has a track record with actual patients he has helped in actual licensed medical practice.
Both of these doctors know what they are talking about.
I am the LAST person on earth that believes stuff just because there is a book or website that says something. Anyone can write a book or website and give false information. In fact, the majority of books out there are full of false information. History books being a perfect example.
My own family has benefited from this new medical knowledge (that really isn't new, just new to us) and so I KNOW this information is true and real, because I have experienced it first hand.
But keep this in mind... Even though it is argued by no one that placebos really do work, if you are given a placebo and TOLD it is a placebo, it won't work for you.
What is the difference then? The BELIEF that the placebo is going to help cure you. It really is as simple as that.
There is always a percentage of both the placebo AND the real medicine that never helps people, in every test with every medication. If you don't beleive it will help you, even the actual "real" pill won't help you.
Keep that in mind when you read this book.
I don't like to endorse products unless I am really sure of them.
I have done more than read this book, I have listened to Dr Lipton on three seperate radio programs, and researched this subject matter from other studies and doctors, and from my own personal experience in healing myself.
