Book Reviews of The Big NowhereBook Review: Explodes the Cop Genre Summary: 5 Stars
This was my first exposure to Ellroy's works. In it, the way he presents crime, cops, criminals, civilians, reporters, and street life is so far removed from prior fiction. Everyone is demystified and shown as real (real messed up) people. It sets the stage for LA Confidential and White Jazz which are both good reads. I have since reread it several times and never get tired of the great characterizations and complex situations.
Book Review: what a book Summary: 5 Stars
This was probably the most complex crime novel I've read, yet I enjoyed it to the last page. I absolutely loved the ending. Took me a few pages to get used to Ellroy's style of writing, but once I had that under my belt, it went smoothly. This is not a book that you read over a longer period of time. You have to read it within a few days, otherwise you'll forget all the interesting characters that this book has to offer.
Book Review: One helluva book! Summary: 5 Stars
Man, dig this crazy book! This book is beyond fantastic and is truly epic in format. Unlike L.A. Confidential which covers several years, this book covers only one month in early 1950, and yet, it is as effective if not more so than L.A. Confidential. Ellroy's characters are extremely likeable and it's easy to get caught up in their problems. All in all, a very good book! If there were six stars, i'd give it ten!
Book Review: Quintessential Ellroy Summary: 5 Stars
This is my favorite Ellroy book. Buzz Meeks is one of the greatest fictional characters I've ever read about. I read LA Confidential first and thought it was good. Big Nowhere inspired me to read just about every scratch Ellroy has put to paper, the inspired and not so inspired. Of the "LA Quartet" this is the lynch-pin. If you don't like this you won't like Ellroy, if you do, you'll love the rest.
Book Review: even better than Chandler Summary: 5 Stars
Along with Black Dahlia, this is my favorite mystery/crime novel of all time. I like it even better than Chandler or Hammet. It has a sense of "truth" to it that other crime novels lack. It has an almost biblical feel to it that is hard to describe, but I think that anyone who reads it will kno what I am talking about.
Just read it! You may be disturbed but you won't be sorry.
