Book Reviews of The Beatles AnthologyBook Review: There are places I remember Summary: 5 Stars
The Beatles Anthology is an excellent read. Although lots of this information is somewhat familiar, it is brillantly linked into a year-by-year analysis of Beatlemania and well described by the Fab Four. The book is quite large and heavy, and therefore, difficult to read in bed (as I did). The only negative criticism I have is that the later years (1967-1970) don't appear to be covered in as much depth as the earlier years (it seems more pages were devoted to the earlier years). One interesting comment: you can flip to any page and read about their history without needing to read through the chapter first. And, the book gives an excellent understanding as to why they broke up. After reading this, I better understand that Yoko and Linda were just minor players in the break up. It's also sad to see the "boys" (as George Martin refers to them) growing and changing into independent, aging "men" who no longer need the others for support.
Book Review: All You Need is Love! Summary: 5 Stars
I am reading 'The Beatles Anthology' at the moment and I think it is great! At first, I didn;t know what to expect but it is brill! As it is actually written by the fab 4 who changed music, you know that it is what really happened! It gives u loads of info on the actual musical side of things and not just their amazing story from going from working class lads struggling to get a job in a terrible club to 4 of the most talented musicians in the world! Being a musician myself, I found the way that they actually wrote about every album is very informative and it has helped me to write reviews for my own website which I have just started! allyouneedislovefab4.homestead.com - please please me by visiting as it is a very new website! anyway, the anthology is nicely written and easy to understand and it keeps you interested at every point of their musical story! It is probably the best beatles book on earth, or even across the universe.....
Book Review: I wish I could go higher than 5 stars! Summary: 5 Stars
10 stars to say the least! First of all, I ordered this book through Amazon and received it VERY quickly - thanks Jeff Bezos!Getting back to the Beatles Anthology, what a job they have done and thanks to George Martin and the late-great Derek Taylor. This book is big and heavy because the Beatles were/are big and a heavy part of our culture. The story is finally told the right way and not to put anyone down like the late Nick Schaffner, Lewisohn, Hunter Davis or others who have written great books. If it weren't for them, we wouldn't know so much in the first place. But this book HAD to be happen. John, Paul, George & Ringo - thanks for everything! One little thing missing - I wanted to know more on the modern day, Anthology video, CD and book get togetherness. Who called who? How was it decided? And, yes, more from Yoko's modern day participation. Thanks for the Love and Music! Can't wait for Beatles One CD!
Book Review: The Beatles' Final Testament Summary: 5 Stars
Published a year before George Harrison's death, "The Beatles Anthology" (2000) is not a revisionist whitewash in comparison to the 1995 video and audio versions of the Fab Four's archival project. The group's autobiographical effort is a compelling and, at times, poignant read - with a treasure trove of never-before-seen photographs and artwork. There have been numerous biographies and critical studies on the group, yet the British quartet's story is doubly fascinating when the members have their say on the subject. Harrison, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr have followed the late John Lennon's "warts and all" approach in discussing their Beatle past. For all the fame, wealth and plaudits the group received, one also senses the burden placed on each member. Regardless of the mixed emotions, the Beatles succeed in placing their remarkable legacy in its proper perspective. This aspect alone makes "The Beatles Anthology" a valuable work.
Book Review: their name liveth forever more... Summary: 5 Stars
As a first generation Beatlesfan,I have read many books over the years on the Beatles. Some excellent, some good but most just plain exploitive.Because of the principals involved namely John,Paul,George,Ringo et.al,this tome(no exaggeration)offers as close to a definitive look into their history as we are likely to receive. As such it is a beautiful and awesome undertaking. The text is revealing with some insightful and perceptible comments, though I suspect some of it is revisionist. The photographs and artwork are exceptional,if a tad familiar.Fortunately there are many I've never seen. The coffee table design is a bit cumbersome but I imagine that would be the only practical layout. One thought, however, intrigues me while reading this anthology. I can't help but wonder what John Lennon's contemporary views on his Beatle past and this book would be.At any rate, the Beatles appeal is timeless and in my life I've loved them all.
