Book Reviews of The Beatles Anthology

Book Review: The Most Comprehensive Beatles Book Ever
Summary: 5 Stars

Ever since they broke up 33 years ago, The Beatles' career has been dragged through the mud thanks to the deaths of Harrison and Lennon, wannabe/rip - offs like Oasis, and through film with the fictional VH1 schlock "Two Of Us". But "The Beatles Anthology" is undoubtedly the most comprehensive Beatles book ever written.

This is the first book especially comprised of updated commentary with the two surviving Beatles, the late but never forgotton Harrison and Lennon, and such Beatles associates like Sir George Martin and Derek Taylor. Accompanying these insightful, often funny, often poignant interviews are copies of important letters written by The Beatles and record company dittoes and tons of beautiful pictures that perfectly capsulize the different stages of the Beach Boys' career.

This book is probably the definitive Beatles book. However, if you have back problems, are pregnant or have arthritis but you want to own this heavy book, I reccommend the paperback edition.

Book Review: Had to have it
Summary: 5 Stars

I had to own this, but as a starving law student with no time for recreational reading I was planning to wait until the summer. My mother sent it to me as a gift knowing what a Beatle fan I am and I must say, it is a treasure. Just owning it is a pleasure, the book feels like a an item of fine craftsmanship, like a custom chair, a fine watch or my old Thorens turntable, it is simply exquisite. The pages are thick and heavy and the printing quality is such that it is a pleasure to behold.

That the contect is equal to the presentation is what makes this such a treasure. I've read most Beatles books, but this was the first one that felt more like sitting down and talking with them rather than being given a history lecture (well, the second, I have a little British book full of quotes that does rather well).

Lastly there is the photography, including many photos I had never seen before. All reproduced large enough and of sufficient quality to be really enjoyed.

Well worth the money.

Book Review: FABULOUS!! It's nice to finally get their side of it all!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a beautiful book. The pictures are well-presented and interesting. The stories are done in-depth. I especially enjoyed the detailed review of what happened in Manila, plus all the early background stories and pictures. It seemed like there was quite a bit of new info there.

Hard core Beatles fans get most of their information third or fourth hand from many different, and not so reputible sources and hope it is the truth, but wonder if it is a rumor. They also covered this in the anthology, but I had read somewhere that Ringo had left during the making of the White Album, but how can you believe what you read?? It was great to hear and read about them discussing these subjects themselves for a change.

One funny personal note. I usually read laying in bed at night, and when I tried to recline back and rest the book on my ribs, it was so heavy it made my ribs ache, and I had to sit up. It really us a humongous volume, not just in size, but in content.

Book Review: Looking for the One After 909? This is it.
Summary: 5 Stars

From "Love Me Do" to "The Long and Winding Road", the Beatles were always viewed by everyon as a phenomenon. I was born five years after the death of John Lennon, fifteen years after the band broke up, and yet, somehow, I've become an avid fan. Looking at the so-called 'authorized biographies' and such, I thought that this would be some kind of touchy-feely novelistic biography.

Boy, was I wrong!

From the minute I opened it in the bookstore to a random page, I was thrilled. Gung-ho pictures, poignant comments from the four and their closest friends and co-workers(like George Martin). Reading John Lennon's autobiography was a particularly moving moment, seeing the disillusioned Beatle's take on his own hard life. The whole book is not to be read start to finish, in my opinion. Open it to a page and start. I guarentee that you won't put it down until they prise your fingers from the book.

Book Review: A True Ticket to Ride
Summary: 5 Stars

Being a big fan of the fab four I purchased this book because I was satisfied with the Anthology DVDs. Yet this product (the book) has taken learning about the group to a whole nother level. It's very personal and detailed. It does a great job of letting the Beatles tell their story by using quotes by each member as though they were talking to you. The quotes are from different periods in their carreer and most have a number by them so you know when a band member had that thought. The book starts off with a bio of Lennon (again in his words) and then moves on to the rest of the boys. For any Beatles fan that wants to expand their knowledge on the band, purchase this book. However with that said, this book is monsterous, so you won't be reading it while you travel. I'd call it a coffee table book, but honestly it's about the size of a small table. So be prepared for it to be the biggest book in your library. Purchase this book in hardback, you'll love it.
