Brief but bloody is the price of indecision
Although brief, this is one of the clearest presentations of the Bay of Pigs disaster. It shows the weaponry and mentions the most significant actions. All this underlines the still unfathomable reasons why the Kennedy Administration decided on the fatal course of going halfway and withholding support.
This book also shows the tremendous losses of the Castro militia took, and thus Castro won be default, for President Kennedy decided in the end to leave the playing fields and abandon the exiles to their fate. Here in powerful photographs some of the dead on Castro's side scream silently to the heavens.
These U.S. decisions were unpardonable considering that the memory of the successful implementation of air power that turned the tide for Castillo Armas in Guatemala still fresh in Kennedy's advisors minds. Then it was clear from the Guatemala experience that the communists kill ruthlessly even in defeat, as the crimes of Jaime Rosenberg aided by such as the young Ernesto "Che" Guevara, showed. Yet no steps were taken by the Kennedy Administration to protect those opposing Castro in Cuba from such reprisals.
President Kennedy's actions are partially pardoned by the ransom paid. However, since these missteps led to the Missile crisis, it is clear that selecting advisors from the best and brightest academicians has severe drawbacks.
One day in a free Cuba, perhaps a solemn memorial can be laid down, so that the perhaps 3,000 to 5,000 casualties taken by Castro's own forces can be remember, since Castro has tried to let that memory die.
Summary of The Bay of Pigs: Cuba 1961 (Elite)
Osprey's examination of the events in the Bay of Pigs (1961) that led to the Cuban Missile Crisis (1962). In early 1961 President John F. Kennedy gave the go-ahead to an existing plan for Cuban exiles to return to overthrow Fidel Castro's communist regime. While the CIA helped in the planning stages, the attempt would not be assisted by any US armed forces. On the night of April 16, 1961, a force of 1,400 exiles, known as 2506 Brigade, landed at the Bay of Pigs on the south coast of Cuba, supported by a few World War II vintage aircraft flying from Nicaragua. While they succeeded in knocking out some of Castro's small air force on the ground, the remaining Cuban aircraft sank two of the exiles' support ships, and the beachhead became isolated. Fighting continued for three days before Castro's army overwhelmed the landing force. Most of the exiles were captured and suffered a harsh imprisonment before the US negotiated their release. This episode, followed by the installation of Soviet missiles in Cuba, led directly to the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962, and continues to affect US/Cuban diplomatic relations to this day.
