Book Review: A great start to a series

I first read "The Bastard" in the mid-'80s, when I was a teenager and the "North and South" miniseries had first aired and attracted so much attention. I was interested in seeing the other stuff John Jakes had done, and I loved this book so much that I right away hunted down the other books in the series so I would have the complete set. They're the tattered old paperbacks, but they work! I didn't want to read them all at that point, though; I wanted to save them for a special time when I could really immerse myself in them. Believe it or not, that wasn't until now, two decades into my post-college career!
This first book is great. I love Jakes' writing. He has such an easy style that you zip right along and before you know it you've read 100 pages. He doesn't bog you down in a lot of unnecessary detail -- he lets your imagination take over. In "The Bastard" he gives just the right amount of emphasis to the struggle of the main character, Phillippe / Philip, over just who he's going to be -- and which side of the world he's going to call home. This first book seems to be all about carving an identity, and I really look forward to the rest of the series.
I finished this first one in just a couple weeks (which is fast for me, these days; I haven't done a lot of pleasure reading since those aforementioned teenage days!), and then I watched the 1978 movie version of it a day or two later. The movie follows pretty faithfully, switching around a couple details but nothing huge (like Orry Main's missing arm vs. his leg injury in "North and South," for instance).
