Book Review: Great Drink Encyclopedia!

The Bartender's Black Book is a wealth of knowledge and recipes for anyone interested in an amateur or professional career in mixology. There are thousands of recipes, from the classics, to various alternatives and fun-sounding concoctions. It's almost daunting to select a drink to make, since there are SO many options. The book also offers a section in the back on various types of wines. The indexes are great and list drinks by alcoholic components (search tequila and find all drinks that use tequila) as well as drink types such as martini-style drinks, hot drinks, frozen drinks, shots, and beer mixed drinks. One editorial error I noticed was that in the frozen drink index there appear to be a quite a few frozen drinks missing that I noticed while browsing through the book. I'm guessing that this index was copied from an old edition and perhaps the new frozen drink additions were never added. An oversight I'm sure, but that doesn't really prevent you from finding these drinks if you are looking for them. Otherwise, this book offers a lot of great tips and easy to follow recipes. Ingredients are listed simply in the order they should be added to the mixing glass or blender. Although the author suggests mixing your cocktails in a mixing glass with ice using another mixing cup on top to shake, you can easily shake any of these cocktails in a cocktail shaker if that's what you prefer! In any case, I'm looking forward to trying quite a few of these drinks. I just don't know where to start!
