Summary: 5 Stars

When you are interested in astronomy as a hobby: hold off any purchases, and first read this book. Dickinson's and Dyer's book provides a wealth of practical information and lots of well argumented advise, all in a very attractive format. The book is a pleasure to read, it features a very attractive page layout, is well-bound, and contains beautiful full color pictures. When starting with astronomy as a hobby, you will discover that you often return to these 367 pages loaded with accessible and reliable information.

When buying second hand: make sure you get the revised and expanded third (2008) edition (digital technology has caused amateur astronomy to evolve considerably in recent years).

Book Review: Good advice backed by technical specifications
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is well organized in chapters so that you can read just the chapter you need. It has extensive information on all ways of viewing the skies, from unaided, to binoculars, to telescopes, to using cameras with telescopes. It details the advantages of each in a way that is easily understood. It even has a full chapter on just viewing the day sky. The book covers the technical aspects of the instruments used and provides the background one would need to delve into astronomy. The authors rely on their personal experience and do not hesitate to voice their preferences. It is a pretty book and can well qualify as a coffee table topper...

Book Review: Great book for beginners and pro's alike!
Summary: 5 Stars

This book goes into great depth about everything astronomy without going over the heads of those who know nothing of the hobby what so ever. Has amazing pictures from everything from deep space objects to equipment of every kind. This is one of those books where if you just want to flip through it and enjoy the illustrations then you will be quite content without reading a word, but at the same time, goes into great descriptions of anything that you can imagine from a backyard astronomer's perspective. If you only have a couple of space books and are looking to add a few to your collection, then this one should not be missed.

Book Review: Best Book on Amateur Astronomy, Hands Down
Summary: 5 Stars

If you can only afford one book on astronomy, this is it. I've been an amateur astronomer for over 30 years, but this book still held my interest in every chapter. The authors are up to date with the equipment and procedures they talk about, and most importantly, they've used the equipment and procedures they write and talk about. They're very honest, clear and truthful about their critiques when it's crucial for a new astronomer to not lose interest because they can't understand something or some technical detail. They explain it all. I love this book! You will too! Get it!

Book Review: Best beginner book out there
Summary: 5 Stars

The Backyard Astromomers Guide has got to be the best "how to" book I've ever had the pleasure to purchase. No fluff or "I know more than you so just believe me" writing style, but good down home information and suggeastions written in a way that any aspiring beginner astronomer needs and desires. I wish this book had been written 30 yrs ago when I bought my first telescope. further, I wish more authors in other areas of expertise would take this book as a lesson in how to really help the lay person get involved in the endevour they are seeking. 5 STARS ALL THE WAY!!!
