Book Review: self-indulgent and derivative

i read about half of this standing up in the bookstore and i was really alarmed by its vain attempt to achieve an "american psycho"-style social commentary. this is not an acute psychological portrait of modern masculinity, however earnestly the author has indulged his crush on chuck palahniuk. the interest of the reader is initially piqued by the constant profanity and faux brutal honesty of the writing, but this style soon wears out its welcome. ultimately, the book does not produce earnest self-questioning about whether modern males are really as vapid as the tiresome protagonist; you will be surprised at how quickly this, ostensibly the novel's central conundrum, ceases to be of the remotest interest.
