Book Reviews of The Art of Raising a Puppy

Book Review: Great Help
Summary: 5 Stars

This book showed me what I had done wrong in the past. I let my dog, a German Shepherd be the boss and she got away with murder. If you see the movie Marley and Me, my Meghan could have been Marley. I spoiled her because I loved her.

After Meghan died, I was very lost. Finally after 1 1/2 years of lonliness, I got another German Shepherd and named hime Moose. He came from GS Rescue and was 8 mo old. He is now 1 year and 87 lbs.

Because a friend referred this book to me, I got started off right. It tells how you can lovingly show your dog who is boss and teach him the correct way to act. It was a big help to me. Moose is a big boy but very well behaved and gentle. Great Book!

Book Review: A Must-Read for Anyone Getting a Dog
Summary: 5 Stars

This is simply a fantastic book and should be required reading for anyone who is considering getting a dog -- even if you've owned dogs before. I read this book prior to getting a new English Springer Spaniel puppy (my second ESS) and am so glad I read it ahead of time. It gave me a lot to think about and questions to ask myself -- not only about what I wanted from the dog, but also what I plan to bring to the relationship. From the first few weeks of a puppy's life until it is adopted, this book provides an in-depth, thoughtful look at critical aspects of a pup's development and how we, as the pack leaders, can bring out and nuture the best in our dogs. I will be reading How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend next.

Book Review: Excellence
Summary: 5 Stars

I agree with the gentleman from New Jersey in that the Monks DO in fact celebrate their technique quite a lot in their recent book. However, it is always coupled with the technique itself. I am 22 years old and purchasing a GSD for the first time and was hesitant due to my inexperience with GSDs, however, this book provided more insight that I ever expected. The monks teach you how to view your puppy's world through their eyes. Many people don't think about what the DOG may be expecting from YOU. I firmly believe that once you have grasped that concept, your relationship with your puppy will escalate to levels you couldn't imaging - and this book will certainly pave the way.

Book Review: A comphrehensive, wonderfully sensitive book.
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is a well-written, comphrehensive guide to the process of selecting and raising a puppy. It explains in detail each stage of the puppy's early development, and gives the reader a clear understanding of how the puppy is influenced by what he experiences from birth onwards, then goes on to cover housetraining, training of the puppy, and corrections for common problems. This book is absolutely indispensable to anyone who wants to learn a practical, sensitive and sensible approach to puppy raising. The monks have a wonderful style of writing which makes this book fun and easy to read...their sensitivity and genuine love of the dogs that they raise comes through on every page.

Book Review: Can a book have a profound effect on your life ? Yup...
Summary: 5 Stars

My wife and I never dreamed we could love a dog so much. This book was an extremely important part of getting to that point. We now firmly believe there are no such things as "bad dogs", just owners that think they know all they need to as owners (and thus blame the dog when something doesn't work).

But I also need to mention how useful the "Puppy Aptitude Test" was for us. We used it while looking for a puppy, and it was how Baker responded to our informal "quizzes" that brought us to the dog meant for us.

Buy the book AND follow through with its advice. ESPECIALLY, give your dog the time it deserves and needs, and you'll all reap enormous awards.
