Book Reviews of The Art of Raising a Puppy

Book Review: Great insight and understanding of raising a puppy
Summary: 5 Stars

This book is a great help to all puppy owners, new and veteran alike. The monks knowledge of the pack dynamic and the puppy's maturation into adulthood are amazing, to say the least. This books helps guide a puppy owner from day one to adulthood. Basic training and care information any dog owner should know. Even for those who may not agree with all the monks training methods, this book is still a great resource. If you are more of the new age mind of dog training, this book still is a nice companion to a new style training book. I would suggest getting one of each (The power of positive dog training is ok...) and see which methods best suit your and your dog's personalities. No 1 method will suit everyone. But no one should be without this book.

Book Review: One of the best out there
Summary: 5 Stars

Anyone who has, or is thinking about getting a puppy will benefit from owning this book. Even if you have a grown dog, this book gives great advice.

I really enjoy the approach the Monks take: They do an admirable job of explaining the logic behind their tried and true training techniques.

After you finish this book you'll feel like a pro- but be gentle in spreding the knowledge... telling people how to raise their dog is not the way to go about it (if you tried you know)... slip some dog owner this book as a gift- let the experts convince 'em.

One more thing: The monks are so good at their explanations that it is easy to apply to your pet.... something other books seem to be lacking.

Book Review: Nothing missing!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a wonderful book! I could not find a topic that they did not cover.......and well!! From what breed of dog best suits you, how to find a breeder, what to look for in your breeder, every possible problem you could think of encountering, and solutions to them. The book is common sense how to handle a pup. It give reasons for why pups respond as they do. The instincts that cause certain behaviors (that we humans can find annoying-but after understanding why-you might not). How to make yourself the leader of the pack (alpha-dog) so that they pup looks to you for guidance and does not run the house. I've read so many how-to books and this one touches on every subject from before start to finish. It also is an easy, enjoyable read.

Book Review: A great start to this 'art'
Summary: 5 Stars

If you're getting a dog or have a dog read this book. It is a great resource for getting your dog in line. It proved to be a source of information that offered balance to the modern training methods that are based only in rewards.
I prefer the positive motivation but there are times when this book has offered ways to correct bad behavior that 'treats' don't help with.
If for no other reason you should read this book to gain insight into dog behavior. These folks have been doing this for a long time and can help humans see their role in a companion animal's life. i.e. that dog's want and need a strong 'alpha' owner - even if it isn't in your personality type (I had to adjust - but it was for the better)

Book Review: From a professional point of view......

I work in a local Animal Hospital and I see thousands of dogs walk through our doors...some of them well trained, and some of them not. This book gives you information on everything from hand raising an abandoned puppy, puppy stages and development to training. Most people aren't aware that the only real successful way to have a well trained, well rounded, happy dog is by raising and training with love. Yes, you can succeed in training your dog with an iron fist, but your dog's scared, cowering submission will more than likely turn into agressive, violent behavior towards you or your loved ones. I have had nothing but success in reading this book and it is the only book I recommend in my hospital to owner's with new puppies.
